In 2015, Department of Breast Surgery of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi 'an Jiaotong University was established to meet the requirement of clinical practice. Derived from the original Department of Breast Tumor Surgery, it is a brand-new department featuring the diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant breast tumors and nursing care of the breast, which integrates medical, scientific research and nursing resources of the whole hospital, aiming to simplify the treatment process and improve the diagnostic and treatment levels. At present, 18 medical technicians, including 3 chief physicians and 4 deputy chief physicians, 1 Doctoral supervisor and 6 Master supervisors are employed in the department.

The department has a first-class professional team of breast cancer in China, equipped with advanced equipment and clinical technology. It has the capability to diagnose and treat various categories of complicated cases of breast illnesses, such as breast cancer in elderly patients, advanced breast cancer, rare breast cancer and metastatic breast cancer,etc. The department has enjoyed an excellent reputation in the northwest region and even China. In terms of medical treatment, our department is the first to carry out and promote breast conserving surgery, sentinel lymph node biopsy and vacuum-assisted biopsy of benign breast tumors in the Northwest China, and one of the first departments to conduct breast reconstruction immediately after breast cancer surgery and therapeutic breast reduction,etc. In addition, the department applies the most advanced genetic and biological detection technologies in the screening and evaluation of the risk of breast cancer, postoperative recurrence risk and chemosensitivity in breast cancer patients. The department aligns with the most advanced international standards regarding the diagnostic technology for breast diseases, breast cancer surgery and the formulation of comprehensive treatment plan. Funded by Cancer Foundation of China in 2009, the department, as one of the seven diagnosis and treatment centers for breast diseases, participated in the retrospective investigation of breast cancer in China from 1999 to 2008, making outstanding contributions to illustrate the profile of diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer in China. In 2016, the department, along with alternative 12 diagnosis and treatment centers for breast diseases, was involved in the "Precision Medicine Research of the National Key Research and Development Project of Ministry of Science and Technology of China” to contribute to the multi-center clinical cohort study of breast cancer and the construction of biological sample database and diagnosis and treatment information database.

The department also highlights the combination of clinical practice and scientific research to resolve major problems in the specialty and spares no efforts to bring clinical benefits to more patients based upon the achievements of both clinical and basic research. Currently, the department has hosted 5 National Natural Science Foundation of China, 3 projects of Shaanxi province, 2 horizontal projects, 1 major clinical research project and multiple projects of the hospital. As a sub-center, the department also participated in 1National Key Research and Development Project and 1 horizontal project. Over 30 SCI papers have been published including 8 papers with an impact factor > 5. Besides, the department has established cooperative relationship and delivered academic exchange with world-renown universities and hospitals on a regular basis, such as Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and MD Anderson Cancer Center in the United States, and the University of Queensland in Australia,etc.
