The Anesthesiology Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University, founded in 1956, was combined with the Operation Department in 2015 which then became the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine. Currently, it is not only a doctoral cultivation station in anesthesiology, but also the attached institution for Quality-control Center of Anesthesia of Shaanxi Province and the chief unit of Medical Association Anesthesiology of Xi’an. As a grade III level A hospital, the hospital acts as the base of giving national standard training for residents and nurses specialized in operation assistance. Recently, it becomes the national training center of intravenous anesthesia, the base of regional anesthesia and integrated traditional Chinese and western anesthesia technique. What’s more, it is also awarded as the first training center for intravenous anesthesia. As a member of Union of Geriatric Anesthesia and Union of Global Inhalation Anesthesia, the department is doing a great job in these two techniques.
With more than 60 years’ efforts, anesthesiology is classified as a second-rate discipline and Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine has developed into a first-grade clinical department which deals with perioperative complications, conventional anesthetic work, post anesthesia care, post-operative analgesia and pain diagnosis and treatment. At present, there are 83 anesthetists in the department, 6 of whom are professors and 13 are associate professors. Seventeen of the anesthetists have obtained doctor’s degree. Particularly, there is one person awarded with Technological New Star in Shaanxi Province and one with the title of Talented Youth in Xi’an Jiaotong University. As for nurses, 23 are specialized in anesthesia while 108 are specialized in operation assistance.
So far, there are 36 open operating rooms and 16 beds in Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). Total number of operations can be as many as 47,000 cases per year. Painless gastroenterological endoscope as well as endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography (ERCP) and other painless techniques for diagnosis and treatment are carried out simultaneously. The amount of anesthesia cases outside operating room can be up to 15,000 per year. As part of the emergent system, the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine plays an import role in first-aid and resuscitation, pain alleviation and consultations both in and out of the hospital.
As an affiliated hospital, the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University bears the responsibility of teaching medical students of different educational systems, including 5-year education, 8-year education, foreign students and adult-continuing education, which requires different teaching plans. Additionally, education work covers a large area of 2 hospitals, 2 regions, 4 branch campuses and et al, shouldering the task of training residents and anesthetists. Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine has developed rapidly in past 5 years. The major research direction is brain function modulation and organ protection in perioperative period, and the department has achieved 11 National Natural Science funds, more than 20 funds of provincial level and municipal level in last 5 years. More than 20 academic articles and thesis have been published in core journals or included in SCI per year.
The department is facilitated with the most advanced equipments of the nation, besides routine multifunctional modulator of Philips. There are also Drager Zeus and Drager-Peseus Anesthesia machine. To monitor hemodynamic changes, FloTrac system and pulmonary artery catheter are introduced, and fiberoptic bronchoscope is a necessity to give a better respiratory tract administration. Meanwhile, Bispectral Index (BIS) modulator, brain oxygen saturation monitor and neuromuscular monitor are also in daily use for real-time measuring anesthesia depth and brain function. Other apparatus, such as blood-gas analyzer, B-ultrasound apparatus (Transesophageal Echocardiography, desk type and portable) and other equipments for special monitor and treatment are also provided.
Besides conventional operations, complicated operations such as organ transplantation (heart, lung, liver, kidney, et al), major vessels and intracranial aneurysm surgeries are all carried out normally. Controlled hypotension, temperature management and invasive and noninvasive blood pressure monitoring are all in daily use. Bronchial blocker, one-lung ventilation and tubeless anesthesia are mature techniques in thoracic operations. Besides surgery, anesthesia covers a large area of medical treatment, and its technique in postoperative analgesia, painless gastroenterology scope diagnosis, Electrical Convulsion Treatment (ECT) for mental diseases, painless labor and abortion in obstetrics ranks among the best in the Shaanxi Province.
Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine responds to national policies and had done a great job in cultivating young medical forces and outpatient clinic of anesthesiology to help build a better hospital without pain. It is still in progress in developing to a perioperative medicine.
