At 9:00 a.m. on June 16, 2016, invited by Li Enxiao, Director of Medical Oncology Department of our hospital, Professor Graeme J. Poston, Chairman of European Society for Medical Oncology and Director of Liver Surgery of University of Liverpool, and core members of his MDT team Liver Surgery Expert Professor S. Fenwick and imaging expert Professor H. Wieshmann, visited our hospital for academic exchanges.
The three professors conducted clinical ward rounds in Medical Oncology Department and Oncological Surgery Department respectively, heard case reports made by supervising physicians on site, communicated with supervising physicians and patients, read the imaging data, and analyzed and answered the diagnosis and treatment problems posed by supervising physicians. In addition, Professor H. Wieshmann conducted careful and detailed analysis of the imaging data of difficult and complicated cases on the PACS system, gave diagnostic advices and clarified the therapeutic principles of patients.
At 10:30 a.m., an academic exchange was held in the Multi-Function Hall on 8/F of East Building 1. Director of Medical Oncology Department Li Enxiao delivered a speech to welcome Professor Graeme J. Poston and his MDT team to visit our hospital for academic exchanges and ward rounds, and Professor Che Xiangming, Vice President of Oncology Hospital and General Surgery Department presided over the meeting and case discussions. Professor S. Fenwick shared the establishment, development and current status of British colorectal liver metastases MDT and their experience of colorectal liver metastases MDT, Professor Poston, Professor S. Fenwick and Professor H. Wieshmann had full communication and discussion on many issues such as the differences between domestic and foreign MDT, the significance and importance of the establishment of MDT, and the problems should be solved for the construction of mature MDT with experts of the Medical Oncology Department, Radiation Oncology Department, General Surgery Department and Imaging Department of our hospital. Wang Zheng, Deputy Director of Hepatobiliary Surgery Department had in-depth exchanges in many aspects such as surgical method, technology and prognosis for colorectal liver metastases with Professor Poston and Professor S. Fenwick.
Then the Medical Oncology Department of our hospital shared 4 cases of advanced colorectal cancer and the participating experts had a lively discussion on the selection of therapeutic schedule, the rational arrangement and management of therapeutic schedule, the selection of the timing of surgery after conversion therapy and the surgical techniques and functions for patients with hepatic metastases, which pushed the atmosphere to a climax.
The visit of Professor Poston team was warmly welcomed by all related professions in our hospital. Communication throughout the whole activity was conducted in English. The ward rounds and case discussions demonstrate that our hospital has the ability to conduct standardized treatment of patients with advanced colorectal cancer, and their experience and recommendations provide good ideas for our hospital to promote the development of oncotherapy MDT.
