During June 3-5, 2017 annual meeting of European Society of Anaesthesiology (ESA) was held in Geneva, Switzerland. As a member of the presidium of Chinese Society of Anesthesiology (CAS) of Chinese Medical Association, Professor Wang Qiang from Anesthesia and Surgery Department of our hospital attended this meeting and delivered a speech, effectively facilitating communication and exchange with international anesthesia field.

ESA is a top-notch academic meeting of anesthesiology next only to American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) with prominent position in international anesthesiology field. ESA consists of the most influential and famous professionals in anesthesiology, pain medicine and critical care medicine. The invitation for this meeting is of great significance for improving academic status of Anesthesia and Surgery Department of our hospital in the domestic and foreign anesthesiology field.

In the conference address titled “The role of acupuncture in ERAS:opportunities and challenges”, Professor Wang Qiang pointed out that ERAS integrated anesthesia, pain treatment, surgery and nursing to reduce or relieve trauma tress response in perioperative period, reduce complication, accelerate postoperative recovery of patients, shorten hospital stay and reduce medical cost by multi-disciplinary teamwork. Meanwhile, brief and systematic exposition was provided for “potential role and mechanism of acupuncture in ERAS”, a research achievement of the team over the years. Acupuncture therapy can not only realize anesthesia analgesia, reduce anesthetic dosage during the surgery, but also reduce intubation-related complication, reduce postoperative nausea and vomiting, relieve postoperative pain, stabilize haemodynamics during the surgery, enhance immunity, facilitate early recovery after the surgery and cut hospitalization expense. The benefits for patients during the whole perioperative period exactly conform to the advanced ideas of ERAS.

Professor Wang Qiang has been committed to brain protection mechanism and translational medicine research of acupuncture and obtained a series of important achievements. He is a leading figure in integrated Chinese and western medicines nationwide. “New Strategies about Integration between Acupuncture and Enhanced Recovery after Surgery to Accelerate Development of Surgical Recovery”, an excellent achievement exhibited in this meeting further improves international influence of Anesthesia and Surgery Department of our hospital and helps to promote the development of domestic anesthesiology.
