On July 29, Clinical Teaching Lecture Competition of "2021 Training Course for Nurses in the Specialty of Hospice Care" hosted by Chinese Nursing Association concluded in Beijing. In Clinical Teaching Lecture Competition during the graduation ceremony, Li Rong, a supervisor nurse from Department of Radiation Oncology of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) participated in the competition with "Hospice care for an unmarried woman with double vaginas and double uterus diagnosed with cervical cancer complicated with end-stage hemorrhage". Her rigorous curriculum design and steady teaching style left a deep impression on the judges and audience, receiving unanimous recognition from the judges. She eventually grabbed the first place among 318 students from 32 bases across China!

According to the training procedures of specialist nurses of Nursing Department of our hospital, Li Rong was recommended by the hospital to participate in “2021 Training Course for Nurses in the Specialty of Hospice Care” through the process of department recommendation and hospital debate in early 2021. After four weeks of online theoretical study, all the trainees received 4-week clinical practice in Cancer Hospital of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences from July 4 to 31. This lecture competition is a comprehensive and staged summary of what they’ve learned. Li Rong was recommended by the training base with the highest score to participate in the Chinese Nursing Association competition, and finally took the first place.

The honor in this competition fully demonstrates the clinical teaching capability of nurses in our hospital, which is ascribed to the training of every nurse within the department and hospital. According to “Cancer Statistics in China, 2015” released by the team led by Professor Chen Wanqing from National Cancer Center in 2016, the number of cancer deaths in China in 2015 ranked the first around the world. However, only a small proportion of patients receive hospice care services, and the evaluation score of death quality is relatively low. More than 7,000 patients are admitted to Department of Radiation Oncology of our hospital every year, and approximately 100 among them require hospice care. Through this competition, the nurses can put what they’ve learned into practice, promote the development of hospice care in the department, and provide all-round nursing care for patients with advanced cancer and their family relatives.
