On November 5, Professor Kayan, an expert in the field of diagnostic radiology and nerve intervention in the U.S., visited the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) and delivered an informative lecture entitled Design and implementation experience of large-scale multi-center clinical research program at Clinical Research Salon. Zheng Jie, Deputy Director of Clinical Research Center and Professor Han Jianfeng from Department of Neurology presided over the salon.

As a team member, Professor Kayan introduced a single-center clinical study in Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Minnesota, and then compared with another multi-center clinical trial conducted in the U.S., illustrating the limitations of single-center studies. Subsequently, he shared his experience in the implementation of large-scale multi-center clinical trials. Taking the globally well-known multi-center COMPASS program in 2018 as an example, Professor Kayan introduced the establishment and updating mechanism of the clinical research database of this program. In this program, the upload data can be instantly updated when new cases are included. Hence, real-time research information can be obtained in an accurate and rapid manner. Due to the long duration of COMPASS program, novel factors or variables can be timely supplemented into the database, and the data and information of the patients who have received follow-up can be also supplemented as much as possible. Professor Kayan also explained how different centers unified their research protocols, and proposed that the workflow for implementing the research protocols should be explicitly discussed. Finally, he shared his experience in manuscript drafting and stressed that there was no rush to determine the manuscript title, which can be finalized according to the conclusion drawn from the study results.

Since becoming a physician in 2005, Professor Kayan has received multiple honors and awards in clinical and basic researches. He won the Rontgen-Plakette of Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) in 2009, Executive Committee Award of American Roentgen Ray Society in 2012, and elected as a Top Physician in Minnesota Twin Cities from 2015 to 2017. Professor Kayan participated in multiple major clinical trials in Abbott Northwestern Hospital, including intracranial stents, such as Neuroform, Wingspan, LVIS, and blood flow-guiding device FRED. He also participated in large-scale international multi-center clinical trials including DEFUSE 3 and COMPASS,etc. Relevant research outcomes have been published in top-notched academic journals, such as LANCET and NEJM, etc.
