On November 30, 2025, the national finals of the 3rd “Gastric Surgery Elite Team Clinical Skills Showcase” Team Invitational Competition were held in Shenyang. The General Surgery team of the First Affiliated Hospital (FAH) of Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) clinched the national championship title, and Professor Fan Lin, the team leader, was awarded the title of the Best Team Leader.
The competition was organized by the Surgical Medical Equipment Branch of the Chinese Association of Medical Equipment, with Professors Wang Zhenning and Li Ziyu serving as co-chairs. After multiple rounds of selection, including provincial qualifying rounds and regional playoffs, 6 teams out of more than 100 participating teams nationwide advanced to the grand final: Chinese PLA General Hospital, the FAH of XJTU, the FAH of Jinan University, China-Japan Friendship Hospital in Beijing, Renji Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, and Taizhou Hospital of Zhejiang Province.
The team from the FAH of XJTU competed on the same stage with other strong teams such as Qilu Hospital of Shandong University and the Second Hospital of Jilin University, advancing in first place in both the provincial qualifying round (team members: Dr. Qiu Guanglin, Dr. Jiang Zhengdong and Dr. Zheng Zhongqiang) and the regional playoff (team members: Dr. Qiu Guanglin, Dr. Zheng Zhongqiang and Dr. Tong Yingmu). The team for the grand final consisted of Dr. Jiang Zhengdong, Dr. Zheng Zhongqiang and Dr. Tong Yingmu, led by Professor Fan Lin.
The competition comprised multiple segments, including team image presentation, surgical video session, compulsory questions, “standards and norms” questions, and buzzer questions. The content covered cutting-edge guidelines, standardized diagnosis and treatment protocols for gastric cancer, clinical research hotspots and medical ethics, comprehensively assessing participants’ abilities in areas such as theoretical defense and surgical video analysis.
In the theoretical defense segment, the three physicians from the FAH of XJTU delivered precise interpretations of the latest gastric surgery guidelines and management strategies for complex cases. In the surgical video presentation, their control of operative workflow, handling of technical details and careful consideration of patient safety won recognition from the judges. In the “comeback” round, Professor Fan Lin called a timely pause to provide guidance, helping the team secure a crucial 10 points and lock in the championship ahead of time.
This championship victory is a concentrated reflection of the achievements in the hospital’s gastric surgery subspecialty development and highlights the team’s professional strength in the standardized diagnosis and treatment of gastric cancer.
