Chinese and Russian Transfusion Experts Jointly Explore a New Future for the Discipline of Transfusion Medicine in Xi’an

On October 16, 2025, Professor Andrey Yulievich Branov, Chief Transfusion Expert of the Moscow Department of Health and Chief Transfusion Expert at the Sklifosovsky Emergency Care Center, and Professor Dana Evgenievna Pavlova, Director of the Department of Blood Transfusion at the Morozovskaya Children’s Hospital (affiliated with the Moscow Department of Health), visited the Department of Blood Transfusion at the First Affiliated Hospital (FAH) of Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) for an international academic exchange. Together with transfusion experts from Shaanxi Province, they held a seminar themed “Patient Blood Management and Strategies in the Context of Blood Shortages”.

The meeting was chaired by Cui Ying, Director of the Department of Blood Transfusion at the FAH, and was attended by Dong Yanying, Deputy Director of the Department of Blood Transfusion at the Second Affiliated Hospital of XJTU; Kang Yuzhi, Director of the Department of Blood Transfusion at Shaanxi Provincial Cancer Hospital; and senior physicians from transfusion departments across the province.

Cui Ying introduced the participating experts and presented an overview of the FAH and of the department’s development history, organizational structure, staffing, discipline development, and clinical blood use. Professor Andrey Yulievich Branov introduced the current status of blood donation and transfusion in Russia and shared the latest international research advances and practical experience in the field of blood transfusion.

During the open discussion, experts from China and Russia engaged in in-depth exchanges on topics such as blood collection, supply models, risk prevention and control of transfusion-transmitted infections, the use of low-titer type O blood in emergency settings, cold-stored platelets, transfusion immune tolerance, and individualized pediatric therapy.

Subsequently, led by Director Cui Ying of the Department of Blood Transfusion, the Russian delegation visited the Zone 1 of the department and the new Zone 2 laboratory on the 3rd floor of the outpatient building. The Russian experts highly recognized the domestically produced, fully automated laboratory equipment, and both sides discussed similarities and differences in the medical characteristics of both countries and shared internationally aligned concepts.
