From September 15 to 20, 2025, the 8th International Conference of Magnetic Surgery was held in Xi’an. Since Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) initiated the inaugural conference in 2018, the event has grown into a core global academic platform in the field of magnetic surgery, promoting China’s original surgical technologies to the world. This year’s conference was co-organized by XJTU and the Shaanxi Society for Medical Communication, and hosted by the First Affiliated Hospital (FAH) of XJTU and other institutions.

On September 18, the conference began with the Strategic Seminar on the Development of Magnetic Medicine. Four academicians, such as Zhang Pingxiang of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Wang Qiuliang of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, joined leaders from the Provincial Medical Products Administration and Healthcare Security Administration, together with representatives from industry, academia, research institutes, government, and finance to chart the way forward. The academicians stressed the importance of basic research, collaborative innovation, and end-to-end ecosystem building. Professor Lyu Yi’s team reported core achievements such as magnetic anastomosis, and guided discussions on the Expert Recommendations on the Development of Magnetic Medicine (Xi’an 2025), proposing measures such as incorporating magnetic surgery into the disciplinary system and creating green-channel approval pathways. Academician Zhang Pingxiang called for policy support from Shaanxi to prevent the outflow of achievements.

On September 19, the opening ceremony and keynote report session drew experts from more than ten countries, with approximately 31,000 online views. Remarks by Dong Jiahong, Hong Jun, and others affirmed the value of magnetic surgery. Expert reports spanned micro-nanomaterials, magnetic anchoring applications, and magnetically driven robots.

The conference also appointed Deok-Bog Moon (Republic of Korea) and Kanan Yusif-zada (Azerbaijan) as Honorary Professors.

That evening, the Open Project Symposium of the Shaanxi Provincial Key Laboratory of Magnetic Medicine and the First Magnetic Surgery Operative Video Competition were held. Five invited guests discussed applications of magnetic technologies, 11 teams received awards such as the “Mag-Innovation Skillful Hands Award”, and Shen Weiming was appointed as a Distinguished Professor.

From September 15 to 18, ahead of the main program, six live-streamed surgeries were broadcast across five regions, attracting more than 70,000 views and showcasing five complex surgical procedures assisted by magnetic traction.
During the conference, a recognition ceremony marked the 70th anniversary of the founding of the FAH of XJTU and the 15th anniversary of the founding of the “Surgical DreamWorks”, with Outstanding Contribution Awards presented and remarks by Professor Lyu Yi encouraging the teams.
The conference concluded successfully. The Surgical DreamWorks will continue to advance medicine-engineering integration and clinical translation, and the 9th International Conference of Magnetic Surgery will be held in 2026.
