The National Semifinal (Northwest Region) of the 2025 “Qianfan Cup” Integrated Physician-Nurse Artificial Liver Diagnosis and Treatment Thinking Boot Camp was held on September 19 in Urumqi, Xinjiang. Young physician Zhao Yalei and nurse Hou Jingtao of the artificial liver team from the Department of Infectious Diseases teamed up to win first place and advanced to the national final.

Co-hosted by the National Collaborative Group for Difficult and Severe Liver Diseases and the Beijing “Gandan Xiangzhao” Public Welfare Foundation, the “Qianfan Cup” Integrated Physician-Nurse Artificial Liver Diagnosis and Treatment Thinking Boot Camp is a nationwide medical competition. The event officially began at 3:00 p.m. on September 19. This National Semifinal (Northwest Region) brought together the champion contestants who had emerged from earlier regional qualifiers in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Gansu Province, Shaanxi Province, and Henan Province. Through components such as case presentations and skill operation assessments, the competition aims to comprehensively enhance the clinical reasoning and practical abilities of medical staff in artificial liver diagnosis and treatment, promote integrated physician-nurse collaboration, and advance the normalization and standardization of artificial liver diagnosis and treatment technologies.

Following intense and competitive case presentations and skill operation assessments by each participating team, the judges conducted careful deliberation and scoring, ultimately announcing that Team “Light of Life”, comprising Zhao Yalei and Hou Jingtao from the Department of Infectious Diseases, won first place and successfully advanced to the national final. In recent years, the Department of Infectious Diseases has actively advanced the subspecialty of liver failure, securing multiple national and provincial/ministerial research grants. In 2024, the team performed over 1,200 artificial liver treatments and took the lead in applying new diagnostic and therapeutic technologies such as stem cells and bacteriophages to the rescue and treatment of patients with liver failure. This result achieved in this competition reflects the overall strength of the liver failure team from the Department of Infectious Diseases and highlights the department’s efforts and accomplishments in building the liver failure subspecialty in recent years.

The Department of Infectious Diseases at the First Affiliated Hospital (FAH) of Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) will actively share its competition experience and work with peers to advance artificial liver diagnosis and treatment in China, contributing more to safeguarding the liver health of the public. The national final of this competition will be held in November in Beijing.
