Experts from China and Abroad discuss advances in urological oncology diagnosis and treatment

On March 13, 2025, the Department of Urology at the First Affiliated Hospital (FAH) of Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) hosted an international academic exchange event. Professor Theo de Reijke, a renowned Dutch urology expert, visited the hospital, engaging in discussions on clinical case studies of prostate cancer and bladder cancer, department observations, innovations in diagnosis and treatment technologies, and research cooperation with the hospital's top urology team. His research focuses on bladder cancer and prostate cancer, with significant achievements. He also holds positions in several international academic societies and serves as an editorial board member for various journals.

Professor Theo de Reijke, accompanied by Dr. Liang Liang and Dr. Xie Hongjun, first visited the Department of Urology, learning about its development history, experts and scholars, and honors. Professor Xu Shan then led a visit to the Urology Research Institute, which integrates clinical practice, research, and education, with substantial achievements.

The academic exchanges took place at the Urology Research Institute, where Director Li Lei extended a warm welcome to the guest. He introduced the department's leading position in China, particularly in the northwest region, highlighting its talented team, progress in minimally invasive surgery, and innovative achievements.

The meeting, chaired by Professor Fan Jinhai, included presentations on the Department of Urology and case discussions. Professor Liang Liang provided an overview of the department, highlighting its solid discipline foundation, numerous clinical research projects, and the emergence of outstanding talents in succession. Professors Zhu Guodong and Xie Hongjun each shared two special cases and a challenging prostate cancer case, engaging in in-depth discussions with Professor Theo de Reijke to optimize treatment plans. Professor Li Lei and Professor Theo de Reijke discussed the differences in prostate cancer treatment between China and Western countries, noting that domestic diagnosis and treatment are now internationally leading. Professor Wu Kaijie shared the latest developments in the diagnosis and treatment of locally advanced/metastatic urothelial carcinoma through an online session.

In conclusion, Director Li Lei summarized that this visit enhanced academic exchanges and friendship, and strengthened cooperation between both parties. The visit built a platform for international collaboration. The FAH of XJTU will continue to promote the clinical transformation of innovative achievements and inject "Chinese momentum" into global cancer treatment efforts.
