Recently, the First Affiliated Hospital (FAH) of Xi'an Jiaotong University delivered medical treatment for a foreign patient. VANCHIN (pseudonym), a patient from Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy in a local hospital two years ago followed by open choledochoduodenectomy due to common bile duct injury. He suffered from long-term pain and was not effectively treated by oral medication. One year ago, he received open hepatojejunostomy in Turkey and his symptoms were partially relieved, but he still experienced anorexia and low fever.
In March, 2025, VANCHIN was admitted to FAH for medical treatment after knowing that the teams of Professor Liu Xuemin and Professor Li Yu from FAH expertise in hepatobiliary surgery. On March 10, he was admitted to Department of Geriatric Medicine II (International Diagnosis and Treatment Department). Professor Zhao Qingbin’s team explicitly inquired about the medical history and preoperative evaluation and formulated An in-depth surgical plan along with Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery and Department of Anesthesiology. On March 13, the teams led by Professor Liu Xuemin and Professor Li Yu performed "laparoscopic disconnected choledochojejunostomy+bile duct exploration and stone removal+bile duct repair+choledochojejunostomy", which successfully relieved the obstruction and reconstructed the biliary drainage channel.

Postoperatively, the medical and nursing team from Department of Geriatric Medicine II delivered nursing care. They overcame language barrier with the help of English and Mongolian translation tools, provided personalized nursing care and rehabilitation guidance, adjusted the rehabilitation regimen by intimately monitoring his condition and formulated dietary and rehabilitation regimen. Medical staff also delivered humanistic care to help the patient restore confidence. VANCHIN was gradually recovered and highly appreciated the medical staff.
Successful treatment of this foreign patient highlights the professional quality and humanistic care of medical staff from FAH, signifying the mission of "health without borders". In the future, FAH will strengthen the capability and influence of international medical treatment, provide high-quality services for patients from countries along the Belt and Road and help the global health and the construction of National Medical Center.
