On March 19-20, 2019, Professor Charles Lee, Director of Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine in the U.S., Chairman of Human Genome Organization (HUGO) and Chief Scientist of Precision Medicine Center visited the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University for academic exchange. He successively gave academic lectures, watched the live broadcast of Da Vinci robot-assisted surgery and held talks with the leaders of Xi’an Jiaotong University.
On the evening of March 19, a meeting was held in No.707 Meeting Room of the new Science and Education Building, presided over by President Shi Bingyin. She Junjun, Assistant to the President, Chen Mingwei, Director of Innovation Department, Bai Ling, Director of Clinical Research Center, Zhang Guangjian, Director of Department of Human Resources, Ren Hui, Deputy Director of International Exchange Office, the leaders of various disciplines, and excellent young and middle-aged scientific researchers participated in the meeting for discussion and exchange.
First of all, President Shi warmly welcomed the visiting by Professor Charles Lee again. Meantime, he highly appreciated the staff from Precision Medicine Center for their assistance and guidance, especially for the application of National Natural Science Foundation for various disciplines in our hospital. He expected deeper and more extensive collaboration in each discipline between Precision Medicine Center and our hospital. Subsequently, Professor Charles Lee delivered an academic lecture entitled "Precision Medicine at the Jackson Laboratory and the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi 'an Jiaotong University", introducing the development process and remarkable achievements of Jackson Laboratory in the U.S. as well as the structure and core team members of Precision Medicine Center in our hospital, and clarifying the significance and broad prospects of new technologies in the field of precision medicine. Then, the participating experts gave respective speeches, and had a heated and comprehensive discussion and communication with Professor Charles Lee. Finally, President Shi delivered a conclusion remark, hoping that various disciplines can establish intimate ties with Precision Medicine Center for deep and extensive cooperation.
On the morning of March 20, the delegation of Professor Charles Lee watched the Da Vinci robot-assisted surgery conducted in our hospital. The team led by She Junjun demonstrated Da Vinci robot-assisted radical gastrectomy. Professor Charles Lee and his delegation highly praised the surgical skills after watching the live broadcast of the surgery, and then held in-depth discussions on relevant scientific research.
On the afternoon of March 20, Wang Shuguo, President of Xi 'an Jiaotong University, Xi Guang, Vice President of Xi 'an Jiaotong University and He Changzhong, Director of International Cooperation and Exchange Office met with Professor Charles Lee and his delegation, accompanied by President Shi Bingyin, Assistant to the President She Junjun, Ren Hui, and Professor Ye Kai,etc. President Wang Shuguo warmly welcomed the visiting of Professor Charles Lee and his delegation, highlighting that in the era of big data, there will be more new opportunities for the development of interdisciplinary subjects, such as information biology. He also placed high expectation on the development prospects of the international cooperation platform of Precision Medical Center. Afterwards, Professor Charles Lee and his teammates held discussions and exchanges with the leaders of the university and hospital regarding the cooperation mode and talent training,etc.
Our hospital reached a strategic agreement with Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine in the U.S., and jointly established Precision Medicine Center in November, 2018. At present, three full-time researchers are working in Precision Medicine Center. This is the 4thvisit to our hospital by Professor Charles Lee. Subsequently, he delivered a stage summary of the previous work and held in-depth discussions with the heads of various disciplines in our hospital, hoping that two sides can strengthen more in-depth cooperation to facilitate the construction of “world-class university and first-class discipline”, advance the precision medicine level and enhance the international influence of the hospital.
