On December 23, the “Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics List of Chinese Hospitals (2017)” was newly released and explicitly interpreted by Wang Chen, President of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & Peking Union Medical College and academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering in Beijing. The First Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University was ranked 32^nd by overall influence.

In this year's ranking, 1,662 AAA-rated hospitals were evaluated for Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics (STEM), 33 more than the figure in previous year, which covered 29 disciplines. In total, 474 hospitals were ranked in the top 100 either by overall influence or specific discipline. Our hospital was ranked 32^nd by overall influence on the list. Specifically, Discipline of General Surgery ranked 6^th, 10^th for Urology, 19^th for Gastroenterology, 21^st for Thoracic Surgery, 27^th for Oncology, 28^th for Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases, 28^th for Obstetrics, 29^th for Psychiatry and Neurology, 34^th for Nephrology, 36^th for Cardiovascular Diseases and Neurosurgery, 38^th for Respiratory Diseases, 42^nd for Rheumatology and Autoimmune Diseases, 49^th for Ophthalmology, 50^th for Epidemiology, 51^st for Cardiovascular Surgery and Otolaryngology, 56^th for Gynecology and Pediatrics, 59^th for Tuberculosis Diseases, 64^th for Allergy, 65^th for Emergency Medicine, 70^th for Bone Surgery, 71^st for Blood Diseases and 93^rd for Dermatology.

The Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences has released the ranking list for four consecutive yearsbased on the scientific and technological capability of Chinese hospitals. This year, the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences innovatively supplemented a novel concept of STEM for the first time into the evaluation index system to assess the scientific and technological capability catering to the situation in Chinese hospitals. STEM is a comprehensive calculated value that primarily covers the whole process of scientific and technological activities, the entire chain of innovative activities, and reflects the breadth and depth of scientific and technological activities in hospitals from three aspects of scientific and technological output, academic influence as well as scientific and technological conditions with a unified standard, source and method.

STEM was proposed based on the systematic consideration of medical research, especially the law of clinical medical research, the environment for medical scientific and technological innovation development, systematic investigation of disciplinary construction and clinical research in Chinese hospital, relevant international scientific and technological evaluation researches and approaches, which served as a multi-index three-dimensional evaluation of scientific, technological and medical capability of a certain hospital and was applicable to the evaluation of scientific and technological innovation of Chinese hospitals with specific features.

This year, the ranking list (2017) not only maintains the stability of fundamental index frame, but also optimizes and categorizes the evaluation indexes, highlighting clinical research, quality of studies, contribution and influence and emphasizing the contribution of individuals and team work. All the evaluation indexes included in the ranking list are objectively measurable and publicly accessible, which can reflect the core strength of hospital scientific and technological capability and the ranking of a certain hospital by overall influence and specific discipline throughout the country.
