Recently, a team led by Professor Li Shuming of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University applied the first novel surgery of treating four spaces of anterior cervical spine with thecervical intervertebral disc fusion fixed systemadopted for the senior in China.

In the past two years, Mr. Gao, a retired medical worker, has experienced unstable walking with lower limbs and dizziness. His condition has gradually worsened in the last year, leading to a significant decline in quality of life. After admission, the examinations were completed, showing that the multiple segments of cervical spine were unstable and with stenosis, and the C5/6 left uncovertebral joint occurred hyperplasia, resulting in the thinning of the left vertebral artery. After fully communicating with the patient and his families, Professor Li developed the surgery of excision ofintervertebral discs of cervical spines 3-7 (four spaces) of anterior cervical neck of cervical spine for decompression, and the C5/6 left uncovertebral joint osteophyte resection and bone graft fusion and internal fixation. Since there are multiple negative factors such as advanced age, multiple spaces and osteoporosis, Professor Li suggested adopting the novel fusion fixed system for treating the anterior cervical spine to minimize trauma, shorten the operation time, and decrease the risk of surgery. Fortunately, the operation was successfully completed, and the symptoms of the patient were relieved obviously. Mr. Gao could walk by wearing neck circumference on the second day after the surgery, and he discharged on the 7th day after the surgery.

Professor Li and his team are committed to exploring methods to better help patients with more minimally invasive and effective methods. The novel surgery of treating four spaces of anterior cervical spine with the cervical intervertebral disc fusion fixed system adopted is the first case in China.
