On June 12, 8:00 a.m., the opening ceremony of the “China-WHO-DTI 5th International Course in Transplant Procurement Management-TPM” was held in Xi’an. The training course was hosted by the China Organ Transplantation Development Foundation and the Chinese Hospital Association, supported by WHO and the Red Cross Society of China, and undertaken by the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University.

During the training course, a total of eight world famous experts of organ donation and procurement, including Pro. Marti Manyalich, President of International Society for Organ Donation and Procurement (ISODP), from Spanish, UK, France and Iran, and a number of domestic famous experts and scholars were invited to come to Xi’an. They held training for relevant personnel who were involved in organ donation, imparted the knowledge of organ donation and procurement in English, had mutual exchange and learning in terms of hot and difficult topics in the domestic and foreign organ donation and transplantation fields, and shared successful experience.

Pro. Xue Wujun, Director of Kidney Diseases Branch of our hospital, Pro. Marti Manyalich, President of ISODP, Pu Miao, Deputy Secretary General of China Organ Transplantation Development Foundation and other leaders and experts attended the opening ceremony. In the opening ceremony, Shi Bingyin, Director of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University, analyzed the current trend of organ transplantation by utilizing the data from National Health Commission of PRC, and put forward the expectation of having mutual exchange and learning in terms of hot and difficult topics in domestic and foreign organ donation and transplantation fields and sharing successful experience through this training course on management of organ donation and procurement technology, thus cultivating a number of specialists of organ donation, further improving the organ donation level of our country and promoting the health development of transplantation in our country.

Organ transplantation has always been the preponderant discipline of our hospital. Under the leadership of Pro. Xue Wujun, academic leader of transplantation team, we have overcome the problems in traditional concepts, system, mechanisms and conditions etc., actively explored and established the organ donation system that is suitable for the situation of China, developed and improved relevant mechanism of organ donation continuously, and upgraded and set the conditions required for organ donation in our hospital continuously since the starting of organ donation works. Up to May 22, 2018, the total number of kidney transplantation cases is up to over 4800, while the longest health living time is 37 years. In addition, the number of living kidney transplantation cases is over 530 and the number of DCD kidney transplantation cases has broken through 1000, enjoying one of the hospitals with most DCD kidney transplantation cases in our nation. What's more, we have borne fruitful results in successful application of liver, kidney, heart and cardiopulmonary transplantation technologies. The implementation technologies of DCD and the construction experience of OPO have been promoted in the nationwide, which can promote the implementation of DCD in nationwide and the system construction of DCD, as well as the development of scientization, legalization and internationalization of organ transplantation in our country.

The training course covers management of organ donation and procurement, discovery and identification of potential donor, diagnosis of brain death, management and maintenance of donors, communication with families, coordination and distribution of organ donation etc. In the training course, various teaching methods were combined, such as classroom lecture, workshop, role-playing simulation and self-tests, which introduced foreign advanced working experience and combined with humanity and laws of China, which is more interesting and highly efficient, thus enabling trainees to have a comprehensive and profound understanding on management of organ donation and procurement, improve their theoretical level and practical skills. This training course is a national training session of organ transplantation in China, aiming to provide a learning and communication platform for relevant experts, scholars and medical personnel in organ transplantation field, and play an important role in promotion of the health development of organ transplantation in our country. The trainees who completed the training were awarded with the Spanish TPM certified certificate of training.

The success of holding training course has cultivated a number of excellent talents for organ transplantation of China. It is of great significance in improving working level of organ donation and procurement in China and promoting health development of organ transplantation.
