Over the first week of March, 2023, the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) has successively completed five cases of organ donation in simply 5 days, including 3 cases of all major organ donation of liver, kidney, heart and lung. In total, 10 cases of kidney transplantation, 3 liver transplantation, 4 heart transplantation and 3 lung transplantation were completed, saving the lives of 20 patients with end-stage organ failure. These achievements were accomplished under multi-disciplinary team (MDT) and multi-department cooperation, which reflected the maintenance, evaluation, procurement and transplantation technology of organ donation, and showcased the comprehensive strength in medical technology, administration and cohesion in our hospital. It also signified that after half a year's adaptation, it is a normalized procedure to perform heart and lung donation and transplantation the same as liver and kidney donation and transplantation, reflecting the disciplinary construction achievement of organ procurement organization (OPO).

On the afternoon of March 6, the hospital was informed that a potential donor was identified in Baoji. OPO team immediately contacted multiple transplantation-related disciplines to carry out evaluation work, coordinate the transferring vehicle, prepare for necessary materials, wait for brain death determination and confirm donation issues. At 9 p.m., OPO along with 14 medical staff from transplantation disciplines carried relevant materials and set off for the local hospital, and arrived in Baoji two hours later. At 0: 40 a.m. on March 7, the organ procurement surgery was initiated, and the heart and lung procurement was completed within 1 hour. Then, medical staff immediately returned to our hospital. At 4 a.m., all organ procurement procedures were completed, and the donated organs were transferred to our hospital smoothly. Five recipients arrived at our hospital overnight and waited for organ transplantation. One case of heart transplantation, 1 lung transplantation, 1 liver transplantation and 2 kidney transplantation were carried out successively.

The organ donation and transplantation team is facing such heavy workload every day, on standby 24 hours a day, fearless and striving to save the lives of patients one after another.
