Professor Kevin K.W. Wang of University of Florida visited the Imaging Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University for special lecture and topic exchange on May 5 at the invitation of Professor Zhang Ming of Imaging Department.

Subsidized by Research on Damage Mechanism of Brain Trauma Based on Image Biomarkers, a key talent introduction project of universities, Professor Kevin K.W. Wang of University of Florida was invited to give a special lecture of “Utilities of Blood-based Biomarkers for Traumatic Brain Injury” in the 4/F of the Imaging Department. Professor Kevin K.W. Wang received medical doctor degree of University of British Columbia and pathological postdoctor degree of Wayne State University. He is the Director of the Research Center of Neuroproteomics and Biomakers of University of Florida and former Chairman of National Neurotrauma Society of America. With original contribution to the discovery and detection of proteolytic enzyme, systematic biology and diseases in brain injury and drug abuse research field, he enjoys great popularity internationally. The biomarker protein in the blood (UCH-L1 and GFAP-BDP) developed by him has been identified by FDA as a first-in-class non-invasive diagnosis for mild brain injury, which draws wide attention in international neurological diseases and clinical medicine field. He has published more than 200 papers in internationally top-notch journals such as Lancet Neurology and PNAS and delivered more than 150 keynote speeches in international meetings such as NIH, WHO and National Neurotrauma Society of America.

This lecture was based on the ongoing brain injury topic made by Professor Zhang Ming, Bai Lijun, Professor of Life Science and Technology College of Xi’an Jiaotong University and Zhu Feng, Doctor of Translational Medicine Center of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University. Some progress and achievements were made in research on function and structural magnetic resonance of patients with brain injury during more than two years of the topic. Professor Kevin K.W. Wang provided help for future development direction of researches made by brain injury teams by analyzing and guiding the selection of brain injury biomakers and present condition of international researches on brain injury. During this academic exchange, experience about brain injury researches in respective fields was completely shared mutually. The valuable opinions and guidance provided by Professor Kevin K.W. Wan would be conducive to deepening and development of brain injury topics. Meanwhile, thorough discussion and exchanges about cooperation of brain injury topics, team construction and talent cultivation were made by Professor Kevin K.W. Wang and Professor Zhang Ming, Professor Bai Lijun and Doctor Zhu Feng. In the future, the cooperation method of combination of medicine and engineering with multi-disciplines will be adopted. With doctoral students and postgraduates cultivated jointly, exchange and cooperation on brain injury will be further promoted to create better conditions for development of brain injury topics.
