On July 20, 2017, Professor Martin Charlton, academic leader of Nano Manufacturing and Research Center, University of Southampton came to our hospital for a visit and exchange on invitation, and gave an academic report at the “Lecture Room”.

As invited by Professor Lyu Yi, Principal assistant of Xi’an Jiaotong University, Deputy Director of the Department of Medicine and Director of Shaanxi Province Regenerative Medicine and Surgical Engineering Research Center, and Professor Wu Rongqian, Deputy Director of Institute of Advanced Surgical Techniques and Engineering, Xi’an Jiaotong University, Professor Martin Charlton came to Surgical DreamWorks of our hospital for a visit and exchange on invitation, and gave an academic report at the “Lecture Room” (Episode 12) on July 20. Professor Wang Hairong et. al. of College of Mechanics, Xi’an Jiaotong University accompanied them all the way.

Firstly, Professor Wu Rongqian introduced the series of scientific achievements of the surgical dreamworks, the series of magnetic surgical devices, sputum suction robot, cholangiography robot, true liver simulator laparoscopic surgery training system, and high voltage pulse electric field biological effect study. Then Professor Martin Charlton gave an excellent lecture “Generic photonic crystal gas/chemical sensor system” and carefully answered the practical problems encountered by the teachers and students of surgical dreamworks.

Secondly, the two teams respectively reported their own scientific research results and made a lively discussion. Professor Martin Charlton and Professor Wang Hairong offered further guidance, and highly appraised the innovative research carried out by Professor Lyu Yi’s team in the direction of combination of engineering with medicine, indicating that the research could not only follow the trend of development of international biomedical engineering, but also practically solve clinical problems. They expected that both parties could conduct exchanges and cooperation in fields related to biomedical engineering.

Finally, both parties reached a consensus on the plan to launch the international cooperation project and joint postgraduate education in the field of combination of engineering with medicine. After the conference, Professor Martin Charlton agreed to serve as the visiting professor of our hospital with pleasure, and Professor Lyu Yi issued the letter of appointment on behalf of the hospital.
