At 9:00 in the morning of March 30, a news briefing was held to declare a major innovative technology made by our hospital to reporters: ear prefabricated on the forearm was successfully transplanted to the auricle of a patient without ears.
On March 29, after 7 hours surgery made by the surgical team led by Professor Guo Shuzhong and Professor Shu Maoguo from Department of Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery and more than 20 medical personnel, ear prefabricated on the forearm was successfully transplanted to the auricle of a patient without ears, which not only brought the patient a perfect appearance but also created a medical miracle surprising the whole world again.
According to Professor Guo Shuzhong, the difficulty of this surgery was to find an appropriate vessel on the seriously damaged part of the patient’s head. The vessel was of the thickness of a matchstick. It needed to be magnified 10 times under microscope and sutured more than 10 stitches with the suture thinner than hair. The surgery was of great difficulty. With patency of vessels guaranteed, the ear needed to be transplanted to an appropriate place with appropriate angle and size as well as lifelike appearance to recover hearing of the patient. At present, with stable vital signs, the patient was recovering in the intensive care unit. After two weeks treatment and monitoring until complete survival of the new ear, the patient would return to work and welcome a new life journey.
