Founded in 1956, Department of Orthopaedics of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University is one of the earliest orthopedic departments in Northwest China. Staff of the department, represented by professor Yin Peipu, has been kept in mind of people in Northwest China for their exploration in the treatment of Kaschin-Beck disease harming the health of the people. There are 17 physicians with senior titles, including 4 doctoral supervisors, 7 master supervisors, 3 committee members of the international professional society, 4 committee members of the domestic professional society, and 4 chief directors and vice chief directors of provincial professional society. There were 95% of the physicians withmaster's degree or higher, and 90% of the nursing staff having bachelor's degree or higher. At present, the Department of Orthopaedics is a key clinical construction department of National Health and Family Planning Commission of the People’s Republic of China, a deputy director unit of Orthopedic Committee of Shaanxi Nursing Association, and a member unit of Northwest Association of Rehabilitation.
As for clinical care, the department mainly focuses on spine surgery, joint surgery and traumaorthopaedics, as well as the development of bone tumors and pediatric orthopedics. At present, it has become aclinical department of domestic advanced level. The department is equipped with several C-arm perspective apparatuses, arthroscopes, diskoscopes, transforaminal endoscopes, intraoperative neuro-monitoring apparatuses, plasma knives, bone tumor microwave ablation therapy instruments, and other modern specialized equipments. In recent years, it has carried out complete spinal osteotomy for treating severe spinal deformity (lateral curvature), minimally invasive surgery with diskoscopeand transforaminal endoscopes, and the first MIDLIF surgery in Northwest China, all of which have obtained good clinical effects and social impact. The department has also forged ahead with determination, and taken the lead to conduct the minimally invasive surgery for rotator cuff injury and shoulder dislocation with arthroscope in Northwest China. Meanwhile, it has made certain achievements in joint replacement of complex and difficult knee, hip, and shoulder, as well as in the field of surgical therapy for congenital dislocation of hip. The department is quite characteristic in the treatment for critical and severe compound traumatic fracture and minimally invasive steel plate implantation, both of which have significant effect.
In the field of scientific research and teaching, the department has published more than 150 academic papers on national core journals in recent years, including 30 SCI papers. It has also edited and participated in the editing of 15 works. It has obtained 7 NSFC projects, 15 provincial and municipal scientific research fund projects, and 7 national patents. It has won the second prize of Provincial and Ministerial Research Achievements for three times and the third prize for two times.Digital orthopedic technology and 3D printing technology have been maturely applied in clinics, which have significantly improved the efficacy of complex surgery. The department also undertakes the standardization training for resident doctors and cultivation of domestic and overseas students under five, seven and eight-year program of clinical medicine. It actively carried out the teaching reform and established orthopedic tutorial project for graduate students of Xi'an Jiaotong University in 2015. It has been praised as the excellent teaching unit for several times, and was praised as the hospital teaching demonstration unit in 2015.
