Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine (formally known as Respiratory Medicine Department) of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University was founded in 1976 through subdividing the General Medicine Department. In the same year, the department established a bronchoscopy room, and took the lead to conduct the fiberoptic bronchoscopy in Northwest China. In 2012, it was included into National Key Clinical Specialist Construction Programs by the National Health and Family Planning Commission.
After making continuous efforts by several generations, the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine has become the largest medical, teaching and research base of respiratory in Northwest China. It has also been selected as a standing committee unit of Respiratory Society, Chinese Medical Association, and chairman unit of Shaanxi Province Respiratory and Tuberculosis Society, Chinese Medical Association.
The department has nearly 100 medical and technical personnel, including 6 professors, 5 associate professors, and 17 attending and resident physicians. There are 3 doctoral supervisors and 9 master supervisors. The Party branch and the department successively won the honorable titles of the Advanced Party Branches of Universities in Shaanxi Province, and Innovation and Demonstration Unit of Universities in Shaanxi Province. More than 20 medical staff were praised as excellent individuals of national health system, and excellent individuals of performance assessment by Shaanxi Provincial Department of Health.
The medical level of the department is advanced in China and leading in Northwest China. The department has set up respiratory intensive care unit (RICU), which achieves the highest rate of successful rescue of severe patients in Northwest China. So far, the number of cases accepting bronchoscopy was highest in Northwest China, and diagnosis and treatment of pleural diseases has reached a domestic advanced level. It has been geared to international standards in the field of diagnosis and treatment of bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and has also participated in a number of well-known international multi-centric clinical studies. The department could receive and follow up more than 10,000 cases. While focusing on specific treatment for specific disease, it set up the first smoking cessation clinic and multidisciplinary clinic for lung cancer in Northwest China, as well as bronchial asthma clinic and lung tumor clinic, so as to provide services for the patients.
In the field of scientific research, it took the key discipline construction as an opportunity and formed several fixed research directions, such as pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary vascular disease and bronchial asthma, as well as lung cancer. In recent years, it has set up more than 40 projects, including 1 international economic cooperation and exchange special fund project of Ministry of Science and Technology, and 14 projects of National Natural Science Foundation (1 key project), which have obtained the fund of RMB 13 million. Seven projects have won the second prize of National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology and Chinese Medical Sciences and Technology Award. In recent years, the staff have published more than 300 papers (90 SCI papers), and more than 10 monographs. The department has hosted and participated in 52 clinic multi-center drug studies.
This department, as a granting unit of doctor and master's degree, has cultivated graduate students all around China. It has hosted and co-hosted more than 10 international and domestic conferences. In recent years, it has won a number of teaching awards, and its teaching work has been praised by other teachers and the majority of students.
