Founded in 1957, Oncology Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University Health Science Center is the first professional department to have set up oncological surgery, medicaloncology, radiotherapy and biotherapy in the Northwest China. It has 497 open sickbeds, and is the most powerful oncological specialty integrating medicine, teaching and research in the Northwest China. This department has reasonable talent team gradient, and there are 30 professors, 33 associate professors, and 25 attending physicians, among whom 64% obtained doctor degree (78/122).

Oncology Department belongs to the first national batch of awarding points of master degree of Oncology, belongs to the first national batch of research bases of clinical drugs, belongs to the first batch of awarding points of doctoral degree of Oncology in the Northwest China, and is the sole key clinical construction discipline of Oncology in Shaanxi Province. It is chair unit of China Medical Association Oncology Branch, Shaanxi Province Medical Association Radiation Oncology Therapy Branch, and Shaanxi Province Pharmacological Society Chemotherapeutics Professional Committee, chair unit of Shaanxi Province Anti-Cancer Association Surgical Oncology, Breast Cancer, Esophageal Cancer and other professional Committees, as well as Normalized Demonstration Ward of Cancer Pain of the Health and Family Planning Commission. The discipline keeps a foothold in Xi’an, radiates the Northwest China, and becomes a transfertreatmentunit of difficult and critical patients of Oncology Department in the Northwest China, a training base of international stoma school, clinical training class and maintenance training base of central venous access PICC and infusion port, as well as a vascular channel college in Shaanxi Province.

The department emphasizes the idea of“early diagnosis and early treatment, and it carries out not only ultra-early diagnosis of breast cancers but also early diagnosis of malignant gastrointestinal tumor and endoscopic mucosal resection and endoscopic sub-mucosal dissection under ultrasonic endoscope, and transanal endoscopic microsurgery, etc. As for the early-stage malignant gastrointestinal neoplasms which cannot be conducted endoscopic resection, on the basis of carrying out skillful chest and laparoscopic surgery, the Oncology Surgery Department carries out minimally invasive surgery of stomach cancer, colorectal cancer, esophagus cancer and other cancers by assistance of da Vinci Robot, and applies rapid recovery surgery mode which is of small trauma and rapid recovery. The Medical Oncology specialty combines with pathology department of our hospital, carries out detection of patients’clinical cancer molecular target and drug resistance protein, etc., makes an effective combination of chemotherapy and gene detection and targeted therapy, thus making our department become the earliest and mostinfluential clinical center which carries out individualized cancer treatment in the Northwest China. The tumor radiotherapy major not only conducts three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy, stereotactic radiotherapy and other accurateradiation therapies, but also makes full use of the advantage of multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment of tumor MDT, and obtains the treatment effect similar to surgery by means of argon-helium cryo-ablation, radioactive seed implantation, stereotactic radiotherapy (SBRT), continuous hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy, and radiofrequency ablation, etc.

The department lays emphasis on training of innovative ability, and in recent three years, it has carried out 39 new technologies, won 26 patents, won 37 national level and provincial level scientific and research funds, and published 365 papers on national level and foreign periodicals, including 271 on SCI; and it also undertakes teaching of the undergraduates, postgraduates, eight-year postgraduates and overseas students.
