Founded in 1956, Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University is the department with strong technical force, complete functions, complete equipment and normative services amongobstetrics and gynecology departments of general hospitals in Northwest China. The Obstetrics Department, as a third-level subject under the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department, consists of three clinical subspecialties, namely general obstetrics, maternal medicine and fetal medicine. It boasts of many well-known national experts and academic leaders, and a strong medical technology team consisting of 18 physicians with senior titles and 22 doctors of medicine.
In recent years, the department has made considerable development, and its influence has been significantly improved under the support of National Clinical Key Specialty Construction Project. It has mastered several special medical technologies: diagnosis and treatment technologies for gestational hypertension, recurrent spontaneous abortion, and interruption of maternal-neonatal transmission o fHepatitis B. It takes the lead in diagnosis and treatment of emergency and severe diseases, and stubborn diseases in Northwest China. Several technologies have reached the domestic and international advanced level. It has always taken the lead in diagnosis and treatment for gestational hypertension in China. In 2007, it became the deputy leader unit of national gestational hypertension cooperation team, and participated in the task of the 10th Five-Year Plan–Prevention and Cure Researchon Gestational Hypertension and Coagulation-related Complications. In 1990s, it launched theclinical study on the prevention of preeclampsia through calcium supplementation during pregnancy. It prevented and controlled eclampsia with drugs for selective dilatation of cerebrovascular, treated early-onset severe preeclampsia through combination of Chinese traditional and western medicine and gestation management of preeclampsia patients during further pregnancy, thus forming a set of practical experience for preventing and treating gestational hypertension. As Shaanxi Province Severe Pregnant And Lying-In Women Treatment Center, Pregnancy Hepatitis B Prevention and Control Demonstration Base, Shaanxi Province Genetic Disease Diagnosis Center, and Shaanxi Province Prenatal Ultrasound Screening Center, it could provide good pregnancy protection for pregnant women in Shaanxi Province and surrounding regions. It has even attracted a number of high-risk pregnant women in other provinces to come for consultation, diagnosis and treatment.
In recent years, the departmenthas obtained 5 NSFC projects and 6 provincial projects, and 80 academic papers were published, including 34 SCI papers with the highest impact factor of 6.3. It has won the second prize of Shaanxi Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award for two times. In addition, it has obtained 6 patents for utility models, 1 patent for invention, 13 school and hospital-level new medical technologies, and the first prize of school-level new technology for one time. The department has sent 5 excellent young and middle-aged physicians to first-class foreign medical units, and also sent young and middle-aged backbone physicians to attend international and domestic conferences for academic exchanges. It has participated in editing domestic guidelines, specifications andexpert consensus. Experts in the department prepared China’s 12th Five-Year Plan textbook-Obstetrics and Gynecology (Edition 8) and the national integrated textbook-Female Reproductive System (Edition 1), published the monograph Gestational Hypertension, and sponsored thecore journal Chinese Journal of Woman and Child Health Research. The department has played the role of a teaching hospital to cultivate practical medical talents, and has cultivated hundreds of interns, graduate students and students of normalized training with the help of the teaching skills laboratory of the hospital. It has also won the awards of school-level teaching reform projects and teaching achievement award.
