Founded in 1956, the Department of General Surgery of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University was selected as amaster’s degree authorization unit of the first batch, the doctor’s degree authorization unit of the second batch in China and the first one in the field of general surgery in Northwest China. In 2003, it was approved as a postdoctoral research station. At present, there are 391 staffs, including 138 physicians, 247 nurses, and 6 other staffs. It has become the Endoscopic Diagnosis and Treatment Technology Training Base of Ministry of Health, China ERCP Technical Personnel Standardized Training Project Base, Training Base for General Surgery Physicians of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and College of Surgeons of Hong Kong, StrokePrevention and Screening Base of Ministry of Health, Carotid Artery Intervention Training Base of Ministry of Health, andPeripheral Vascular Intervention Training Base of Ministry of Health. In addition, it is also asuperb medical departmentin Shaanxi Province, Shaanxi Province Anti-Cancer Association Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Tumor Precision Medical Demonstration Center, Shaanxi Province Hepatobiliary Surgery Clinical Medicine Research Sub-Center, Shaanxi Province Talent Training Model Innovation Experimental Area, Shaanxi ProvinceMedical Association General Surgery Honorary Chairman Unit, Organ Transplant Branch, Endoscopic Surgery Branch Chairman Unit, and Shaanxi Province Medical Association Tension-Free Herniorrhaphy Center.
Sub-specialties of the department include: liver/minimally invasive surgery: “Theoretical innovation and technological breakthrough of the improvement of efficacy of liver cancer surgery with inflammatory damage control”won the second prize of National Prize for Progressin Science and Technologyin 2016. Liver transplantation/portal hypertension surgery ranked the ninth in the national liver transplantation data quality comprehensive ranking in 2016. Biliary tract surgery is characteristic in conventional minimally invasive treatment for intra-and extrahepatic bile duct stone and gall stone, and radical treatment for gallbladder cancer and biliary duct cancer. Pancreatic surgery conducts general laparoscopic and robotic pancreatoduodenectomy. Gastrointestinal surgery: Laparoscopic and robotic radical operations for gastric cancerare increased year by year. Colorectal surgery generally carries out colon cancer TME surgery, and laparoscopic colonic cancer and rectal cancer radical operation. Breast Surgery generally carries out super early diagnosis of breast cancer. Vascular Surgery generally carries out hybrid operation for aortic dissection and treatment of lower extremity arterial disease with covered stents, and establishes the VTE prevention and control system. SICU takes the lead in aspects of organ transplantation, perioperative protection, and complicated abdominal infection treatment in Northwest China.
Over the past 5 years, it has set up 27 national scientific research projects and published 457 SCI papers, including 16 ones with IF>10 and 54 ones with IF ranging 5-10. It has gained 27 patents for invention and 39 utility model patents. One project has won the second prize of National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology, one project has won the first prize of Shaanxi Provincial Prize for Progress in Science and Technology, and six ones have won the second and third prizes of Shaanxi Provincial Prize for Progress in Science and Technology. Two staffs have won the title of Provincial Science and Technology Star.
The department has participated in preparing 14 guidelines and consensuses, including Operational Guidelines on Laparoscopic Hepatectomy and Guidelines on Pancreatic Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment, and participated in editing national textbooks such as Surgery and Diseases of Digestive System.It has also established the biliary tract, pancreas and liver tumor precision medical demonstration center to promote the normative diagnosis and treatment for diseases of digestive system.
