Broad Institute of Harvard University pays a second visit for in-depth academic exchange

On the morning of October 7, a 5-member delegation including Professor Steven Hyman, Mark Daly, Aarnoand Hailiang Huang from Broad Institute of Harvard University paid a second visit to the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) for academic exchanges after the first visiting in May 2017. Relevant leaders from XJTU, Shi Bingyin, President of our hospital, Ma Xiancang, Vice President of our hospital and professors and directors of relevant departments participated in the academic exchange.

Two years ago, bilateral sides established cooperation and mutual assistance in scientific research and achieved breakthrough outcomes. Dependent upon previous cooperation and specific scientific research projects of our hospital, both sides expect to persistently deepen cooperation and yield original results.

Broad Institute is affiliated to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University in the United States. It is jointly established by multiples scientists from MIT and Harvard University for the purpose of project cooperation. Three years ago, Professor Steven Hyman from Broad Institute established an intimate bond between Boston and Xi 'an. His team will highly cherish this opportunity of cooperation, strive to achieve better cooperation results and jointly carry out global research on relevant diseases. During the academic exchange, Dr. Hailiang Huang delivered a detailed report on previous cooperation process and preliminary results between two sides, and illustrated the future direction of cooperative research.

After the academic meeting, Professor Steven Hyman and Professor Mark Daly headed the 5-member delegation to visit theBiobankand Brain Science Center and posed for a group photo.

On the morning of October 8, bilateral sides held a closed-door meeting to deliver detailed reports and discussions on specific topics and determine explicit plans for future cooperative research. Both sides unanimously reached a consensus that based on previous cooperation outcomes and under the guidance of the U.S. team, our hospital will take the lead to create international-level original achievements in the field of psychiatry in the next two years. Meantime, the U.S. partner continues to provide full financial coverage for the team members led by Professor Ma Xiancang at Harvard University.

The research team also shared recent research results. In August, 2019, the latest research results of the team led by Professor Ma Xiancang regarding the gut-brain mechanism of schizophrenia were online published inMolecular Psychiatry, a top-notch international journal in the field of psychiatry. On September 30, 2019, cooperative research results of bilateral sides, both as the corresponding affiliations, were accepted byNature Genetics, a top-notch international medical journal, which has laid a consolidate foundation for subsequent research.
