Chinese doctors offer long-term medical assistance to Africa

On December 2, 2021, People's Daily Overseas Edition published news report entitled Chinese doctors offer long-term medical assistance to Africa, approving the advanced deeds of medical team of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) to provide medical assistance to Malawi.

In September, 2020, COVID-19 pandemic has raged around the globe. As the leader of the 8th batch of Chinese (Shaanxi province) medical aid team to Malawi, Li Xiaogang, Deputy Chief Physician of Department of Anesthesiology of our hospital, has led the team members to fly thousands of miles to Malawi, a landlocked country in southeast Africa, and carry out the task of medical aid since then. To implement the goals of "establishing cooperation mechanism of 30 China-African counterpart hospitals" and "accelerating the construction of China-African friendship hospitals and strengthening the cooperation between China and African counterpart hospitals", Li Xiaogang has fully played the role of medical team as a bridge and assisted the establishment of counterpart cooperation regimen between our hospital, Kamuzu Central Hospital and Mzuzu Central Hospital based on comprehensive investigation and communication, which has been highly recognized by bilateral authorities of two countries.

In September, 2020, COVID-19 pandemic has raged around the globe. As the leader of the 8th batch of Chinese (Shaanxi province) medical aid team to Malawi, Li Xiaogang led the team members to Malawi and began toimplementthe task of medical aid. They were originally scheduled to return to China at the end of September this year. However, due to work requirement, Li Xiaogang and his team members are still working in Malawi. Recently, viral variant occurred in South Africa and other African countries. Malawi is also facing the risk of repeated outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic after Christmas holiday. Li Xiaogang and team members remain determined towork in Malawi and provide high-quality medical services and scientific guidance on pandemic prevention and control for local patients and compatriots no matter how risky the viral variant mutated and how severe the pandemic aggravated,continually contributing Chinese wisdom and strength to the friendship between Chinese and African people and the building of a global community ofhealth for all.
