The 13th World Congress of the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association was held in Geneva, Switzerland from September 4 to 7, 2018. Under the support of the Hospital’s Fund for Attending High-Level International Conferences, Researcher Zhang Xufeng and Dr. Lu Qiang attended the Congress on behalf of the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery and the Surgery Dream Works.

On September 4, day for continuing education, scholars from all over the world introduced the latest progress in the diagnosis and treatment of hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases to the attendees. From September 5 to 7, main meeting time of the Congress, all participants witnessed the latest diagnosis and treatment techniques and research progress in the field of hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases. The Congress also set a session of “Living Legend”, in which Professor Sheng Tat Fan from Hong Kong delivered a keynote speech entitled “Continued Improvement of Liver Surgery”, and updated the development history and future prospects of liver surgery. In a report entitled "Personal Experience with Over 2000 Pancreaticoduodenectomies", Professor John L. Cameron from the Johns Hopkins Hospital shared his experience in 2000 cases of pancreaticoduodenectomy with the attendees. Professor Roger Williams from the University of Cambridge made a report entitled “50 Years of Liver Transplantation”, and shared his 50 years of clinical experience in liver transplantation. In the splendid liver session, Professor Kokudo from Japan and Professor Kim from the Asan Medical Center in South Korea shared how to balance technological improvement and patient benefit in laparotomy, laparoscopic liver resection and laparoscopic living donor liver resection. In addition, the Congress also set sessions for surgical clinical research and research paper writing guide. The leaders of famous journals in the surgery field (Annals of surgery,JAMA Surgery,BJS,Surgery,HPB,JOGS,WJS) were invited to give suggestions for the attendees in terms of paper writing, handling of manuscript rejection, writing of bidding document and other aspects.

On the morning of September 7, Researcher Zhang Xufeng introduced the Magnetic Anastomosis for Biliojejunostomy: First Prospective Clinical Trialto the attendees on behalf of the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery and the Surgery Dream Works. He explained the study from three aspects: anastomosis device, the surgical operation method and the patient's postoperative outcome. Finally, he also updated the latest progress of the research on and application of magnetism in surgery in the Surgery Dream Works, such as the laparoscopic magnetic compression bilioenteric anastomosis and digestive tract reconstruction after pancreaticoduodenectomy without suture, which aroused great interest from the attendees and led to a heated discussion with Researcher Zhang. In addition, Researcher Zhang Xufeng also presented the abstract of the surgery video Magnetic Compression Anastomosis for Biliojejunostomy and Pancreaticojejunostomy in Whipple’s Procedure: An Initial Clinical Study, the abstract of the domestic multi-center study Splenectomy May Decrease the Risk of Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Patients with Liver Cirrhosis: A Multicenter Study as well as the abstract of Dr. Lu Qiang’s paper Surgery Start Times and Long-term Outcome after Partial Hepatectomy for Hepatocellular Carcinoma on behalf of the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery and the Surgery Dream Works.

In the Congress, we have not merely learned about the latest diagnosis and treatment methods and research progress in the field of hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, but also showed the magnetic surgery technology to colleagues in the world. We hope that more colleagues can understand magnetic surgery, master magnetic surgery technology and use magnetic surgery technology to relieve the pain of more patients in the future.
