Professor Zhao has been mainly engaged in basic and clinical research of familial aggregated HBV infection with adverse outcomes. The research group has obtained 5 National Natural Science Foundation of China projects, the 2nd-stage Key Clinical Discipline Construction Projects of National Health Commission, the 2nd-stage Major Scientific and Technological Projects in the 11th Five-Year Plan and 12th Five-Year Plan and Youth Talent Foundation by of National Health Commission, etc. The research group has formed disciplinary characteristics in the prevention and treatment of familial aggregated hepatitis B transmission, which has been applied in clinical practice. He has received the first prize of Science and Technology Awards of Shaanxi Province. He has tutored 23 postgraduates and 11 doctoral graduates. He has published 40 papers in SCI-indexed journals with a total impact factor of more than 110, a citation index of 106 times and an H-index of 8.0. As a master's and doctoral tutor, he has tutored 43 postgraduate students and 15 doctoral students, including 2 Excellent Doctors of Shaanxi Province.

Professor Zhao is also the main applicant of National Natural Science Foundation of China entitled HBV invasion and significance to peripheral blood mononuclear cells.
