Professor Yao is Doctor of Medicine and doctoral tutor. He graduated from Department of Clinical Medicine of Xi 'an Medical University in 1989 and has been working in Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery until now. He is currently the Director of the Endoscopy Center of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University and the party secretary of Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery. He has been engaged in diagnosis and treatment of hepatobiliary diseases for a long time, and mastered pancreaticoduodenectomy, hemihepatectomy, complex biliary tract reconstruction, laparoscopic splenectomy combined with pericardial devascularization, laparoscopic hepatectomy, laparoscopic pancreatectomy, single-port laparoscopy and other highly difficult operations as well as minimally invasive Da Vinci robot-assisted surgery. He has completed over 10,000 surgeries. He had an annual outpatient of nearly 1,000 and conducted more than 700 various types of surgeries every year.

Professor Yao has published more than 100 academic articles in core Chinese journals including 10 published in SCI-indexed journals. He has undertaken 1 National Natural Science Foundation of China, 3 Scientific and Technological Research Projects in Shaanxi province, 1 project of Health Commission of Shaanxi Province and 2 scientific research projects in hospital. He also participated in many scientific research projects at the national, provincial and university levels. He was awarded 1 second prize of Scientific and Technological Progress Award of Shaanxi Province and 1 second prize of Scientific and Technological Progress Award of Xi 'an.
