To further implement the requirement of the “Notice of National Health Commission on Printing and Distributing National Medical Quality and Safety Improvement Goals in 2022" and enhance the basic skills of surgical clinicians, Hospital Administration Institute of National Health Commission launched the nationwide "Torch Program". The "pancreaticojejunostomy" project proposed by Professor Wu Zheng, Director of Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery and Professor Wang Zheng, Deputy Director and Head of the pancreatic sub-specialty from the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) was selected as National Demonstration Project for Basic Surgical Skill Improvement.

Five departments of our hospital were approved as the first-batch Training Bases for Basic Surgical Skill Improvement Project of Hospital Administration Institute of National Health Commission. On September 15, 2022, the kick-off training meeting was held in our hospital. Professor Bai Hongliang from Clinical Skill Center introduced the development of basic surgical skills in our hospital to colleagues and peers nationwide. After the kick-off meeting, the pancreatic sub-specialty of Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery launched the first national training program of pancreaticojejunostomy. Professor Wu Zheng illustrated the 11-year development of pancreaticojejunostomy in our hospital.

With this surgical procedure, Professor Wang Zheng received the first prize of Chinese Young Surgeon Award and Young Investigator Award of American Pancreatic Association (APA), respectively.In the training session, Wang Zheng delivered online demonstration.

Pancreaticojejunostomy is the most critical stepof pancreatic surgery, which is highly demanding and risky. It has specific anastomosis characteristics of the anastomosis between parenchymal and hollow organs. The failure of pancreaticojejunostomy will lead to pancreatic fistula and even massive bleeding. During oral explanation, Professor Wang Zheng also demonstrated the surgical procedures, and highlighted the cautions from the selection of needle size, radian, suture material and the angle of anastomosis,etc. After surgical demonstration, surgeons from Zhejiang, Hunan, Jilin and other provinces conducted surgical practice online, and more than 10 young surgeons and visiting surgeons completed surgical practice in-person. Director Wu Zheng and Deputy Director Wang Zheng delivered guidance and comments on the spot.
