From July 26 to 29, 2022, the finals of the 1st “Guochuang Cup” National Medical Equipment Innovation Competition in conjunction with China Medical Equipment Innovation Competition held by National Innovation Center for Advanced Medical Devices (National Innovation Center) concluded in Shenzhen, China. The project entitled “IRETA Digital Tumor Precise Ablation Treatment System” of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) received the first prize in the start-up group (1 first prize in total).

"Guochuang Cup" is an important platform to promote industry collision and integrative innovation. This competition attracted more than 300 innovative medical devices across China. After fierce competition, the project entitled "IRETA Digital Tumor Precision Ablation Treatment System" jointly submitted by Surgical Dreamworks and Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery of our hospital grabbed the first place in the semi-final and successfully proceeded into the finals in the start-up group.

During the finals, doctoral student Ren Fenggang from Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery, introduced the core contents of this project from technical background, clinical bottleneck issues, product design and industrial translation, etc. This project organically integrates tumor ablation using pulsed electric field, endoscopic and interventional technologies, providing a more minimally invasive and safer local treatment for digestive system tumors. This clinical requirement-oriented product is designed to resolve bottleneck issues in clinical settings. Clinical "bottleneck" issues, preclinical trials and industrial plans have been highly recognized by the judges. Finally, this project received the first prize in the start-up group with high score. Besides, this project also grabbed the "Most Popular Project Award" after taking the first place in the real-time online voting for popular project.

In this competition, all projects are submitted by Tsinghua University, Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology of Chinese Academy of Sciences, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and innovative medical enterprises settling in Shenzhen and Suzhou, covering tumor treatment, biological diagnosis, advanced materials, intelligent medicine and other aspects. All participants are leaders in the field of innovative medical equipment in China. The pulsed-field ablation project coordinates disciplinary strength of Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery and Department of Gastroenterology, and cooperates with the advantageous engineering majors, such as School of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Electronic and Information Engineering, School of Mechanical Engineering of XJTU. Under the guidance of Professor Lyu Yi and other experts, this project gears towards clinical translation in a solid and steady manner. The project team will further implement major requirements of scientific and technological work, strive to achieve breakthroughs in core technologies, accelerate the transfer and translation of scientific and technological outcomes, deepen the industrial integration and accelerate the innovation of domestic medical equipment via “medicine-science-research-industry-administration” coordination, aiming to build a "pillar of the great power" in the medical field and contribute to the realization of "Healthy China" strategy.
