On November 25, 2021, Science and Technology Innovation Conference of Shaanxi Province was held in Xi 'an. Cheng Fubo, Vice Governor of Shaanxi province, announced the science and technology awards in 2020 approved by Shaanxi provincial government.

The project entitled Research and application of key prevention and treatment technologies of thyroid diseases, completed by Professor Shi Bingyin’s team from Department of Endocrinology of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi 'an Jiaotong University (XJTU), received the first prize of Science and Technology Progress Award of Shaanxi Province. The team innovatively put forward a novel strategy of terminating anti-thyroid drug therapy for the first time worldwide, which increased the cure rate from 50% to 85% and decreased the recurrence rate from 50% to 15%. The team first established mouse models of hyperthyroidism in China, and established, for the first time, macaque and tree shrew models of hyperthyroidism across the globe. The team was the first to propose the theory of "newborn immune tolerance to prevent hyperthyroidism" within the international community, which has been fully verified in the mouse, macaque and tree strew model experiments. In China, the team pioneered in implementing novel technology of fine needle aspiration molecular diagnosis of thyroid nodules, which significantly improved the diagnostic accuracy of thyroid papillary carcinoma. In the past 32 years, 40,000 patients have been examined, thyroid carcinoma patients have been screened and treated timely, and more patients could avoid unnecessary surgery. Research results of this project have been included in the guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of thyroid nodules and tumors by American Thyroid Association, and promoted in tens of hospitals nationwide.

The team led by Professor Mou Jianjun from Department of Cardiovascular Medicine completed the project entitled Early predictive factors of primary hypertension and target organ injury, which received the first prize of Natural Science Award of Shaanxi Province. In this project, early predictive factors and mechanism of primary hypertension and target organ damage were investigated from the perspectives of population, animals and cell molecular biology, demonstrating that the changing profile of blood pressure and body mass index during early life can predict the long-term target organ damage, such as heart, kidney and blood vessels and the risk of cardiovascular diseases. In addition, the mechanism of salt-sensitive hypertension caused by the interaction between environment and genetic factors was elucidated, providing a novel idea for the research and prevention of hypertension. Partial research results and testing methods established in this project have been highly recognized by prestigious scholars at home and abroad in the fields of hypertension, nephrology, cardiology, molecular genetics and epidemiology, which have been cited by top-notched journals, such as Nature Genetics, Circulation, BMJ, Nature Communications, Hypertension and Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN), etc. Some of the research results have been cited by professional guides at home and abroad. Professor Luyckx from University of Zurich, Member of International Society of Nephrology, published a Commentary in JASN, highlighting that the team's research plays a significant role in unraveling the association between blood pressure and kidney diseases.

The project entitled Application and promotion of key technological innovation in perioperative management of complicated hepatic echinococcosis completed by Professor Liu Chang from Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery, and the project entitled Application and promotion of key technologies in minimally invasive thoracic surgery conducted by Professor Fu Junke from Department of Thoracic Surgery received the second prizes of Science and Technology Progress Award of Shaanxi Province. The project entitled Research and application of intensive management of artificial airway and magnetic coupling intelligent sputum-clearing robot for critically ill patients accomplished by Yuan Lirong from Surgical Dreamworks, and the project entitled Mechanism of tumor microenvironment and invasiveness and metastasis of digestive tract tumors performed by Professor Wang Jiansheng from Department of Thoracic Surgery received the third prizes of Science and Technology Progress Award of Shaanxi Province.
