Surgical Dreamworks makes a breakthrough inex-vivo organ perfusion and preservation

Mechanical perfusion preservation at room temperature is a major breakthrough in the field of organ preservation. When theex-vivoorgans are perfused with oxygenated blood, drugs and nutrients at normal body temperature, the physiological environment and cell physiological metabolism can be maintained, which can reduce cold ischemia, mitigate its negative effect and increase the organ vitality. Compared with 12-hour preservation time of conventional static cold preservation, mechanical perfusion at room temperature can significantly prolong the organ preservation time and also provide the possibility for organ evaluation and repairing prior to transplantation. Rapid progress has been achieved abroad in this regard. Global prestigious colleges and universities, such as Cambridge University in the U.K. and Zurich University in Switzerland have successively carried out relevant research & development and innovation of this technology, and gradually occupied a technological monopoly.

Surgical Dreamworks from Xi 'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) has been devoted to resolving the bottleneck problems in the field of organ transplantation for many years, insisting on independent innovation. Guided by the advanced mode of medicine combined with engineering, the research teams engaged in magnetic levitation pump, oxygenator, perfusate composition research, sensor and controller system closely cooperated to develop the multi-organ universal perfusion preservation device for both animal experiment and clinical application, which overcame the technical barriers from foreign countries, resolved the difficulty of maintaining the long-term vitality ofex-vivoorgans, obtained independent intellectual property rights, and completed the prototype development and stability test. Besides, Surgical Dreamworks team successfully accomplishedex-vivoperfusion and preservation of animal liver for more than 16 hours on June 27, 2021 (the experiment was terminated when the required time was achieved). During liver perfusion and preservation, the liver hemodynamics was stable, the liver color was ruddy with uniform texture, the bile was produced continuously and steadily, the lactic acid level tended to decline, and all parameters of the perfusion solution were within the normal range.

Subsequently, Surgical Dreamworks will further expand the function of perfusion and preservation system, prolong the preservation time ofex-vivoorgans as possible, achieve organ repair and real-time assessment of organ vitality , conductex-vivostudy of diseased organs and perform organ-targeted precision therapy, leading the revolution of organ transplantation mode, opening a new page of liver transplantation and bringing concretebenefits to the patients.
