On January 17, Li Qi, Deputy Chief Physician from Department of Neurosurgery of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi 'an Jiaotong University (XJTU), successfully performed the first case of neuroendoscopic transnasal biopsy of posterior pituitary lesions for a patient with central diabetes insipidus in Northwest China. It is the approach with the least trauma and risk to obtain the lesion sample in this region and achieves minimally invasive biopsy of pituitary stalk and posterior pituitary lesions for the first time, providing key pathological basis for the diagnosis and treatment of central diabetes insipidus and making the treatment capability of this disease of our hospital to lead in Northwest China and reach the advanced level across China.

On December 14, 2020, a female patient, surnamed Li from a county in Weinan was admitted to Department of Endocrinology of our hospital and was diagnosed with central diabetes insipidus by Professor Wu Xiaoyan. After the consultation between Li Qi, Deputy Chief Physician from Department of Neurosurgery and Professor Yang Jian from Imaging Department, it was suspected that the disease may be associated with the decrease of hormone which controls urine output caused by a small lesion in pituitary gland. Biopsy of pituitary lesion was recommended to make a definite diagnosis and then further treatment plan was determined. After thorough communication with the patient and her families, Li Qi, as the chief surgeon, performed the neuroendoscopic transnasal biopsy of posterior pituitary lesions under general anesthesia on January 17, 2021. After the operation, the polydipsia and polyuria symptoms of this female patient were significantly alleviated. Pathological examination confirmed that lymphocytic hypophysitis is the cause of central diabetes insipidus. The team led by Professor Wu Xiaoyan from Department of Endocrinology delivered corresponding treatment plans according to the pathological results. Currently, the patient was discharged and intimately followed up.
In 2013, the team led by Professor Wang Maode from Department of Neurosurgery of our hospital started to carry out neuroendoscopic resection of sellar lesions, and established intimate cooperation with more than 10 relevant disciplines, such as Department of Endocrinology and Imaging Department, etc. In 2015, Pituitary Tumor Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) Diagnosis and Treatment Center of our hospital was established. Under the guidance from Vice President Wang Maode and Director Zhang Hua from Department of Neurosurgery, MDT diagnosis and treatment of functional pituitary tumors, such as acromegaly and Cushing's disease and sellar lesions, such as craniopharyngioma and chordoma, were delivered to elevate the treatment efficacy of these diseases to the advanced level in China and conduct prospective clinical trials based on the clinical diagnosis and treatment.
