From June 8 to 12, 2026, the Asia-Pacific Regional Training Course in Nuclear Medicine, titled “Clinical Application of Therapeutic Radiotracers Labeled with Beta and Alpha Emitters”, was held in Xi’an. The course was jointly organized by the China Atomic Energy Authority (CAEA) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and hosted by the Department of Nuclear Medicine at the First Affiliated Hospital (FAH) of Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU).

Chen Chen, Deputy Director of the International Cooperation Center of the CAEA, and Enrique Estrada Lobato, Project Officer of the IAEA, attended the event. Professor Lin Yansong of the Department of Nuclear Medicine at Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Professor Zhang Xufeng of the FAH, and Professor Wang Jing, Chair of the Chinese Society of Nuclear Medicine, Chinese Medical Association attended the training. Professor Yang Aimin, Director of the Department of Nuclear Medicine at the FAH, and Professor Gao Rui as well as other leading experts in the field delivered remarks.

The five-day training course focused on advancing cancer diagnosis and treatment through radioisotope-labeled diagnostic and therapeutic technologies and attracted nuclear medicine professionals from 12 countries across the Asia-Pacific region. The course brought together leading faculty members from China and abroad, with teaching that combined an international perspective with practical clinical experience. The faculty included internationally renowned scholars, leading experts in nuclear medicine from China, and key multidisciplinary specialists from the FAH. International experts such as Enrique Estrada Lobato, Chinese nuclear medicine professors such as Chen Haojun and Yang Jigang, and experts from the FAH’s Departments of Hepatobiliary Surgery, Urology, Medical Oncology, and Cardiovascular Medicine delivered lectures, promoting closer integration between nuclear medicine and various clinical specialties.

The course covered key topics such as the nuclear medicine sector in the Asia-Pacific region, radiopharmaceutical development and regulation, and precision radionuclide theranostics for cancer. It also introduced innovative problem-based learning (PBL) practical modules on the nuclear medicine diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer and neuroendocrine tumors, combining theory with hands-on practice to address clinical challenges. Special sessions on department development, research management, and the cultivation of young professionals were also included. The training concluded with a consensus workshop on nuclear medicine diagnosis and treatment pathways for thyroid cancer. The workshop solicited input from experts from multiple countries to help harmonize standards for nuclear medicine diagnosis and treatment of cancer across the Asia-Pacific region and advance standardized, consistent clinical practice throughout the region.
