Recently, Ward 3 of the Department of Hematology at the First Affiliated Hospital (FAH) of Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) successfully admitted and treated a 49-year-old male patient from Bangladesh. The patient was diagnosed with peripheral T-cell lymphoma and was admitted on April 17. After active treatment, his condition improved, and he was successfully discharged on April 21. This marked the first international patient treated by the department.
This cross-border medical treatment faced multiple challenges, such as language barriers and an unfamiliar environment. After receiving the admission task, Head Nurse Sun Chunhong immediately coordinated and made arrangements, clarified nursing responsibilities, refined nursing procedures, and led the nursing team in fully engaging in diagnosis, treatment, and nursing care. Language communication was the greatest difficulty. The patient spoke only Bengali and a little English. The nursing team used the simultaneous interpretation function of AI translation tools to efficiently overcome communication barriers. Zhang Beirong, nurse-in-charge, was responsible for the patient’s care throughout the process. She sorted out key nursing points in advance and used translation tools to check information sentence by sentence, accurately completing the entire process, including admission assessment, explanation of the patient’s condition, medication guidance, oxygen inhalation, and nebulization care, thereby ensuring the accurate transmission of medical information.

The nursing team strictly implemented refined one-on-one nursing care and paid close attention to the patient’s physical and psychological condition throughout the process. Head Nurse Sun Chunhong conducted ward rounds every day and used translation tools to carefully understand the patient’s needs and physical feelings, dynamically adjusting the nursing plan. With professional nursing care and humanistic care, the team ensured the smooth progress of diagnosis and treatment.
During this treatment, the medical and nursing team of the department successfully completed the treatment of its first international patient through efficient collaboration, precise diagnosis and treatment, and thoughtful service. Based on this practice, Head Nurse Sun Chunhong proposed the goal of improving the team’s international nursing capabilities, organized enhanced learning of medical English and cross-cultural communication, and continued to optimize the nursing service process for international patients, accumulating practical experience for future cross-border medical services.
