The International Ward of the First Affiliated Hospital (FAH) of Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) recently invited Professor Arya M. Sharma, a global authority in obesity medicine from the University of Alberta, Canada, to deliver an international academic lecture on the latest advancements in precision diagnosis and treatment of obesity. The event was supported by the International Exchange and Cooperation Center, with Chief Physician Cui Wei presiding over the session. All medical and nursing staff from the department attended the lecture.

Professor Arya M. Sharma, MD, Honorary PhD, Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada, and Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, has dedicated decades to the field of obesity medicine. He is the founder of the Canadian Obesity Society and has published over 500 academic papers. Professor Sharma has received numerous prestigious international honors, such as the “Obesity Medicine Master Award” from the American Society of Obesity Medicine. During the lecture, Professor Sharma provided a comprehensive analysis of the global trends, pathogenesis, and comprehensive management strategies for obesity. He focused on explaining the mechanism of action, evidence-based data, and clinical applications of Tirzepatide, sharing its effectiveness in weight loss, improving metabolism, and reversing fatty liver. Additionally, he also provided internationally standardized clinical experience in clinical challenges such as long-term weight maintenance and medication for special populations, offering authoritative guidance for the department’s precise and individualized diagnosis and treatment.
After the lecture, Professor Sharma visited the International Ward, offering high praise for the department’s international operations, standardized processes, and the obesity specialty management system. Both parties established a regular academic communication mechanism, laying the foundation for future collaboration in diagnostic and therapeutic research, outcome translation, discipline development, and talent training.
