From October 18 to 20, 2019, the 8th China Association Against Epilepsy (CAAE) International Epilepsy Forum was held in Qingdao as scheduled. Zhang Hua, Director of Department of Neurosurgery of our hospital, was elected as the only Executive Director of CAAE in northwest China and presided over the forum. CAAE International Epilepsy Forum, organized by CAAE, has become an internationally influential academic conference in the field of epilepsy and has received key supports and recommendations from International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) and International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE). Duan Shumin, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Director of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, Professor Micheal Sperling, Editor-in-Chief ofE pilepsia, Professor Tomas Mesa, Vice Chairman of IBE, Professor Sam Berkovic from The University of Melbourne, Australia, Professor Akio Ikead, Chairman of CAOA (The University of Tokyo), Professor Olga Kedo from Brain Research Institute in Julich, Germany, and other experts at home and abroad were invited to deliver speeches to exchange and discuss hot topics and academic progress in the field of epilepsy and promote further development of diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy in China.
During the forum, the 4th general election of CAAE was launched. Professor Zhang Hua was elected as the Executive Director of CAAE. Director Zhang Hua took the lead in establishing the specialty of epilepsy surgery in the northwest region. He was the first to apply the most advanced intracranial electrode technology to resolve the surgical problems of intractable epilepsy. Besides, he also pioneered the application of artificial intelligence hippocampal quantitative analysis as an evaluation tool to identify patients with hippocampal sclerosis in China.
