Recently, the Neurosurgery Northwest Gamma Knife Center at the First Affiliated Hospital (FAH) of Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) introduced the latest generation Elekta Icon Gamma Knife system, successfully completing its third round of iterative equipment upgrades. Officially put into clinical use on August 18, 2025, this milestone marks a new era in the radiosurgical treatment of intracranial diseases in Northwest China, one that combines sub-millimeter precision with non-invasive comfort.

The Elekta Icon stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS/SBRT) system represents the highest level of technology in the field of stereotactic radiosurgery worldwide, with three core advantages.

The optimized treatment workflow shortens the duration of head frame fixation for patients; intelligent pre-planning and efficient registration significantly increase treatment efficiency; the breakthrough in non-invasive positioning enhances both patient comfort and adaptability.

The Elekta Icon system is equipped with ultra-precise dose modulation capabilities, truly realizing the clinical goal of “precisely targeting tumors while fully protecting adjacent tissues”. Its clinical application marks a milestone, as patients in Northwest China can now access precision radiosurgery services locally, fully aligned with international standards.

The Elekta Icon Gamma Knife system has successfully completed a full cycle of quality control, with a specialized team providing on-site guidance. The work included verification of equipment performance, calibration of robotic arm motion trajectories, and accuracy testing of multimodal image fusion, along with rigorous training to ensure standardized operation by the clinical team at the Gamma Knife Treatment and Research Center.

At the same time, the center invited Professor Josef Novotny from Homolce Hospital in Europe, a leading expert in Gamma Knife radiosurgery, to conduct a one-week joint treatment program for 48 patients together with local specialists. The collaboration also achieved international consensus in equipment quality control, treatment planning, and clinical implementation, ensuring that the safety and treatment precision of the center’s clinical applications meet world-leading standards.
