Recently, the First Affiliated Hospital (FAH) of Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) successfully performed Draf Ⅲ procedure for a Bangladeshi patient, Mr. Iqbal Hossain.

Draf III frontal sinus surgery is one of the most challenging procedures for frontal sinus disease, which requires the surgeons have comprehensive anatomical knowledge and sufficient surgical skills to avoid the risk of cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea and eye injury. At present, Draf Ⅲ frontal sinus surgery is the main surgical procedure to treat intractable frontal sinusitis, olfactory neuroblastoma, crista meningioma, cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea or pre-resection of the anterior skull base tumor.

Two years ago, Mr. Iqbal Hossain underwent nasal surgery in a top hospital in India, but he was not effectively treated. He received multiple rounds of diagnosis and treatment in Japan, India, Singapore and Malaysia, failing to achieve high efficacy. After consultations, the patient was admitted to FAH seeking for the minimally invasive Draf Ⅲ surgery. Shao Yuan, Deputy Director of Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Attending Physician Li Huajing and Kang Wei and Liu Qi from the nasal disease team immediately evaluated the patient's condition. He was diagnosed with recurrence after sinus surgery, slight adhesion of frontal sinus cavity, and orbital tissue hernia, and the surgical risk was high. After careful preoperative consultation, Draf III, orbital reconstruction and skull base plasty were successfully implemented.

During hospital stay, Professor Kou Bo from Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery fully delivered in-depth communication with the patient, and explicitly informed him with cautions during hospital stay and the risks of this procedure, etc.

"From the moment I was admitted to FAH, I deeply felt the sense of professionalism and warmth", said the patient after surgery. Over 10-year severe headache was completely alleviated. In the future, he hoped to establish international track with the department to treat challenging diseases for international patients. The patient highly appreciated Chinese physicians and China.
