On April 23, 2025, Professor Paul Van Schil from Department of Thoracic and Vascular Surgery of the Antwerp University Hospital in Belgium and the current President of International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC), was invited by Department of Oncology of the First Affiliated Hospital (FAH) of Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) to visit FAH for academic exchanges. He also joined the discussion and delivered comments for a complicated case diagnosed and treated by lung cancer MDT team in FAH. Feng Guanglin, deputy party secretary of FAH, and directors of Department of Oncology, Department of Radiation Oncology, Department of Surgical Oncology, Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Department of Pathology, Department of Thoracic Surgery and Department of Radiology attended the exchange meeting, which was chaired by Yao Yu, director of Department of Oncology.

In the welcome speech, Feng Guanglin highlighted that Professor Paul Van Schil, as a leading scholar in the field of lung cancer research worldwide, was invited to share development trend and cutting-edge technology in the field of oncology and provide guidance upon the discussion of complicated lung cancer case, which significantly elevated FAH’s diagnosis and treatment capability of cancer up to international standards and improved clinical prognosis of these patients. He hoped that bilateral sides can carry out extensive in-depth cooperation. Subsequently, Feng Guanglin presented the letter of appointment to Professor Paul Van Schil as a visiting professor of FAH.

Professor Paul Van Schil commented on a complicated lung cancer case diagnosed and treated by lung cancer MDT team of FAH. Physician Fu Xiao from Department of Oncology reported a case of potentially resectable stage IIIB lung adenocarcinoma successfully undergoing after neoadjuvant immunotherapy combined with chemotherapy. Relevant experts from Department of Radiology, Department of Pathology, Department of Thoracic Surgery, Department of Radiotherapy, Department of Respiratory Medicine and Department of Oncology discussed the diagnosis and treatment of this case and subsequent treatment plan with Professor Paul Van Schil. Professor Paul Van Schil highly recognized the work of lung cancer MDT team in FAH and shared the diagnosis and treatment protocols for MDT comprehensive treatment of stage III lung cancer.

After the meeting, Professor Paul Van Schil was invited to visit Department of Oncology in the South Division of FAH. Director Yao Yu introduced the history, staffing, scope of disease diagnosis and treatment, clinical research and integrated Chinese and western medicine by Department of Oncology. Professor Paul Van Schil hoped to deepen bilateral collaboration through this academic exchange.
