Surgical DreamWorks’s team from FAH grabs gold medal in China International College Students’ Innovation Competition 2024

From October 12 to 15, 2024, the national finals of China International College Students’ Innovation Competition 2024 was held in Shanghai. A total of 5.14 million projects and 20.836 million students from 5,406 universities and colleges in 153 countries and regions at home and abroad signed up for the competition. Among them, 39,380 international students from 1,993 universities and colleges participated in this competition, bringing 12,063 projects and covering 152 Top 100 universities and colleges worldwide, including Harvard University, Oxford University, Stanford University, MIT and Cambridge University, etc. Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) outshone in this competition, grabbing 13 gold medals (the proportion of gold medals is only 1/10,000), ranking 2nd among all universities and colleges in China, reaching record high in the number of gold medals. Under the guidance from Professor Zhang Xufeng, the project, led by PhD Ren Yaoxing as the main participant, received the gold medal.

Project title: Intelligent diagnosis based on liver imaging——A precise auxiliary diagnosis platform based on global multi-center and multi-modal databases of liver cancer.

Team members: Ren Yaoxing, Peng Ziyang, Zhu Jinguo, Lu Jingming, Jing Chao, Zhang Jiewen, Wu Jingxuan, Wang Zhibo, Ma Zhijie, Zhang Weili, Huang Tianxiao, Wu Ruiyang, Yin Yizhen, Liu Siyuan and Shen Linxin.

Instructors: Zhang Xufeng, Wang Fumin, Lyu Yi, Wu Rongqian, Li Chen, Wang Xiaohua.

"Intelligent diagnosis based on liver imaging" stood out from 1,410 projects in the national finals and received gold medal in the creative graduate student group on the main track of colleges and universities. The purpose of this system is to establish a decision-making for assisting clinicians in lymph node dissection.

In recent years, Professor Zhang Xufeng's team has been devoted to resolving clinical controversial problems through engineering medicine mode, established cooperation with 15 top-notch university-affiliated hospitals around the globe, such as Johns Hopkins University, Stanford University and Emory University, and integrated the world's largest multi-modal and multi-center data for the first time, developed the uniMed-Perceiers lymph node metastasis prediction model, and built an imaging-pathology integrated auxiliary diagnosis and treatment system.

PhD Ren Yaoxing, the main leader of this project, is mainly engaged in medical multimodal data fusion analysis and machine learning. He led the team to participate in all categories of innovation and entrepreneurship competitions, and received over 30 awards at national, provincial, ministerial and university levels, including gold medal in China University Students’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition 2022 and Top 6 in the 9th “China Software Cup” Competition. He has published 4 academic articles in well-known journals, including Annals of Surgery. He has obtained 8 national invention patents as the first applicant, and received multiple honors such as China National Scholarship and China Telecom scholarship, etc.
