From August 13 to 17, 2024, the 9th National Postgraduate Summer School—"Surgical Innovation and Practice of Engineering Medicine", co-hosted by Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) and Surgery Group of Chinese Society of Surgery of Chinese Medical Association, was held in the First Affiliated Hospital (FAH) of XJTU. More than 60 postgraduate students from 24 universities in China, such as National University of Defense Technology, Zhejiang University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Sun Yat-sen University, Nankai University, Army Medical University and City University of New York, etc., participated in in-person theoretical study and practical operation, with a total of 680 online viewers attending the expert lectures.
Professor Zhang Ming, Vice President of Graduate School of XJTU and Director of Department of Talent Training of XJTU Health Science Center, chaired the opening ceremony. Professor Lyu Yi, Director of XJTU Health Science Center, President of FAH and Director of National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center for Precision Surgery and Regenerative Medicine, Professor Wang Jiandong from Department of General Surgery of Xinhua Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, also Member and Secretary-General of Surgery Group of the Chinese Society of Surgery of Chinese Medical Association, and heads of Teaching Department of FAH, National Innovation Platform for Industry-Education Integration of Medical Breakthrough of XJTU and National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center for Precision Surgery and Regenerative Medicine were invited to attend the opening ceremony.
Secretary-General Wang Jiandong and Professor Peng Shuyou from the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine delivered speeches, respectively.
Lyu Yi, President of FAH illustrated surgical technological innovation in the history of surgical development at home and abroad, proposed to adhere to the practice of engineering medical innovation and explored innovative training mode of industry-education integration for outstanding medical talents. Professor Wang Jiandong shared innovative application of bile liquid biopsy in the diagnosis of malignant biliary tumors. Professor Peng Niancai elucidated the application status and prospect of molecular diagnosis and biological detection products. Professor He Dalin cited the self-developed 200W blue laser surgical equipment as an example to explicitly introduce the whole-process cooperation mode from core technological breakthrough to medical application, and finally into clinical practice. Professor Fu Yili of Harbin Institute of Technology reported the present situation of the development of surgical robots. Professor Xu Feng illustrated how the interdisciplinary study of mechanics and medicine brought new horizons to traditional medicine. Professor He Jiankang shared the development history of 3D printing technology.
Wu Rongqian, Yan Yang, Li Qiling, Zhang Guangjian, Guo Long, Li Yu, Ren Fenggang, Wang Fumin, Chen Hu and other experts shared the research progresses in the fields of surgical innovation and practical development in engineering medicine, self-developed instrument and equipment, the application of artificial intelligence in the screening of endometrial cancer, and the significance of interdisciplinary research in thoracic surgery, etc.
Students visited Med-X Research Institute in iHarbour, Animal Experiment Center and School of Future Technology, respectively. Deputy Director Ma Feng introduced the original inspiration of platform construction, research profile, nine major tasks of the construction of National Medical Center, and XJTU’s measures in talent training in the field of engineering medicine, etc.
During the practical operation of innovative engineering medicine technologies hosted by Surgical Dreamworks, Professor Guo Baolin's team demonstrated the application of multiple hemostatic hydrogels. Through practical operation, students had in-depth understanding of laser equipment, magnet-navigated tracheal intubation equipment and intelligent sputum suction robot.
In the face-to-face session between teachers and students, Deputy Director Zhang Yong and Associate Professor Dong Dinghui discussed with the students regarding the issues of postgraduate study planning, the balance between resident training and scientific research, and patent protection, etc.
Subsequently, student representatives shared their learning experience at summer school. Finally, the teachers presented the certificate of graduation to the students.
