Recently, the First Affiliated Hospital (FAH) of Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) has persistently organized multiple rounds of international MDT (multidisciplinary treatment) consultations, aiming to provide novel ideas, and explore novel paths and methods for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with complicated and refractory diseases, achieving excellent outcomes.
In June, 2024, FAH successively carried out international remote MDT consultations for two patients with complicated and refractory diseases. FAH’s MDT of tumor diagnosis and treatment in Yulin successively partnered with internationally-renowned experts to carry out international remote MDT consultation for a patient with multiple tumors and a case of duodenal malignant tumor complicated with pyloric obstruction. Takeshi Yamada, Director of Department of Gastroenterological Surgery of Nippon Medical School, a well-known expert in the field of tumor treatment, Professor Kay Uehara from Nagoya University, Professor Yao Li from Department of Anorectal Surgery of China-Japan Friendship Hospital, and Professor Keihiro Kimura, a leading expert in the field of the upper gastrointestinal tumor surgery in Japan, were invited to attend these two MDT consultations, respectively.
All experts attending MDT consultations delivered in-depth analysis and discussion regarding the severity of diseases, key and challenging imaging and pathological issues at each stage of diseases, jointly evaluated the patients’ severity of diseases, and finally formulated a comprehensive and feasible treatment protocol that brought the most benefits to the patients, aiming to achieve the highest efficacy, improve clinical prognosis and elevate the quality of life.

To improve FAH’s diagnosis and treatment levels for difficult and critical cases, enhance the patients’ treatment experience, and elevate international development levels of FAH and disciplines, FAH has initiated international remote consultation for complicated and refractory cases since April this year, and actively explored and implemented a novel pattern of international remote MDT consultation. All departments in FAH actively recommended internationally-renowned experts to participate in this campaign, and Medical Department was in charge of reviewing and putting on record for the qualifications of recommended international experts. At present, 66 international experts are recorded in the consultation expert database, covering 38 disciplines.
Up to now, FAH has partnered with internationally-renowned experts to conduct international MDT diagnosis and treatment for 7 cases, involving medical oncology, thoracic surgery, general surgery and other disciplines, enabling patients with refractory and critical diseases to receive authoritative advice and diagnosis and treatment protocols from globally prestigious experts without going abroad.
