Taking life interventions as a breakthrough, Professor Shi Bingyin's team conducted the first international clinical trial (ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04475822) to compare the effects of low- carbohydrate diet, 8-h restricted eating and combined dietary interventions of these two on patients with metabolic syndrome in Shaanxi province, China, targeting unhealthy lifestyle pattern of excessive intake of carbohydrates and unstable dietary time pattern. These research results reveal that both low-carbohydrate diet and time-restricted eating can significantly alleviate subcutaneous fat obesity. Time-restricted eating is recommended for patients with visceral fat obesity, and the combination of these two interventions even yields better efficacy. This study proves that simple lifestyle interventions can effectively mitigate metabolic syndrome, which will be of significance for prevention and treatment of this disease in the future.

This original study is completed by the FAH of XJTU. Doctoral student He Mingqian is the first author. Professor Shi Bingyin from Department of Endocrinology and Professor Wang Yanan from Institute of Immunology and Metabolism of Med-X Institute are co-corresponding authors. This study has captivated widespread attention at home and abroad, becoming one of the most popular articles in Cell Reports Medicine (Most read). The honorary title of "2022 Chinese Scientists with Cell Press Best Paper Award" also showcases international influence of Professor Shi Bingyin's team in the field of diabetes mellitus and metabolic diseases.
