The specialty of Medical Imaging and Nuclear Medicine of the First Affiliated Hospitalof Xi'an Jiaotong University was founded in 1956. In 1978, under the leadership of Professor Qian Zhizhong, old-generation domestic famous radiologist, it became the first national batch of the units having the right to award master degree. Twenty-three years later, led by domestic famous radiologist Professor Guo Youmin, it won approval from State Degree Office in 2002, and became the first unit having the right to award doctoral degree for Medical Imaging and Nuclear Medicine major among local colleges and universities in the Northwest China. In 2013, it won approval of national clinical key specialty construction project of Medical Imaging and Nuclear Medicine.
At present, Medical Imaging and Nuclear Medicine of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University is the largest medical imaging specialty integrating medicine, teaching and research in the Northwest China. There are 8 doctoral tutors including Guo Youmin, Zhang Ming, Yang Aimin, Yang Jian, Han Zhen, Ruan Litao, Duan Xiaoyi and Jin Chenwang, and more than 20 master tutors. Within the discipline, those obtaining doctoral degree account for 30% of the practicing physicians, while those obtaining master degree account for above 90% of the practicing physicians. At present, the discipline has cultivated more than 30 doctoral students and more than 200 master students, and it is the largest output unit of human resources of doctoral students and master students in the Northwest China. Thegraduate master students spread all over the country, and some of whom have developed into academic leaders and disciplinary backbones of the hospitals where they work.
Specialty of Medical Imaging and Nuclear Medicine covers four sub-majors: Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, Ultrasonics and Interventional Radiology. It has made a total equipment investment value exceeding RMB 200,000,000, met the need of and carried out the latest international examination technique, thus having provided an excellent technique platform for various clinical majors and their scientific research of the whole hospital.
This specialty undertakes all types of teaching tasks toward undergraduates, overseas students, master students, doctoral students, normalized training students and advanced students. It has sound series procedure documents which have ensured continuous improvement and steady improvement of the teaching quality, and it is a national residents normalized training base of Medical Imaging and Nuclear Medicine major.
The clinical major of the discipline has the following advantages: (1) diagnosis and identification of difficult diseases of lungs, screening of early lung cancer, diagnosis and identification of pulmonary embolism, research and application of Digital Lung; (2) diagnosis of difficult diseases of the nervous system, diagnosis of cerebrovascular disease, research and clinical application of brain functions; (3) brain development and disease research and clinical application of newborns; (4) research and clinical application based on molecular imaging; (5) research and clinical application of difficult diseases of the abdomen and the pelvic cavity; (6) research and clinical application of difficult diseases of the bones and joints and the muscle system; (7) research and clinical application of vascular and non-vascular intervention diagnosis of various technological means; (8) research and clinical application of breast cancer diseases; (9) research and clinical application of cardiovascular ultrasonics; (10) research and clinical application of 131iodine isotope treatment of thyroid cancer. Researches and clinical applications of the above mentioned items are in advanced level nationwide, and they have provided a reliable basis for accurate clinical diagnosis, treatment and evaluation.
The major items undertaken by the discipline in recent years include national clinical key specialty construction project of Medical Imaging and Nuclear Medicine, major industrial special project of National Health and Family Planning Commission, major special project of the Ministry of Science and Technology, international exchange project of the Ministry of Education, reform and development project of national press and publications, Shaanxi Province Science and Technology Coordination and Innovation Planned Project. It has undertaken more than 20 projects of National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and Shaanxi Province Natural Science Foundation, with the total research fund exceeding RMB30,000,000. It has published more than 500 papers including those included in SCI. The monographs such as Imaging of Respiratory System with Professor Guo Youmin as the editor-in-chief, Chest Imaging with Professor Guo Youmin as the main translator, Central Nervous System CT and MR Differential Diagnosis with Professor Yu Bolang as the editor-in-chief, Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy Diagnosis of the Central Nervous System with Professor Zhang Ming as the editor-in-chief, Imaging Diagnosis of Breast Diseases with Professor Du Hongwen as the editor-in-chief enjoyed a great reputation in the industry. In recent years, the discipline has carried out more than 50 new clinical projects. Through national clinical key specialty construction, the discipline gains obvious increase in its strength, obvious improvement in its professional level and skills, as well as obvious increase in symbolic output.
