Founded in 1956, the Geriatrics Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University is the largest geriatrics department in Shaanxi Province at present. There are 241 ward beds, and 5 sub-departments including Cardiovascular Department, Endocrinology Department, Pneumology Department, Neurology Department and Surgery Department. The department has a total of 15 professors and 6doctoral supervisors. It is Shaanxi Province Geriatric Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center, Shaanxi Province Intractable Case Consultation Center for Geriatric Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease, National Memory Disorder Demonstration Clinic, Shaanxi Province Geriatrics Talent Training Base, NHFPC Carotid Artery Angioplasty and Stenting Training Base, Carotid Ultrasonography Training Base, NHFPC Demonstration Base for Stroke Screening and Prevention, and the first batch of Senior Stroke Centers. Ten professors of the department serve as the members, standing committee members and vice chairmen in the related societies in China.
It has formed distinct characteristics in the thrombolytic therapy for elderly patients with cerebral infarction, interventional diagnosis and treatment for elderly patients with coronary heart disease, early diagnosis and comprehensive management of alzheimer disease,treatment with insulin pump for elderly diabetes, multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment of Parkinson's disease and intractable movement disorders, management of hypertensive chronic disease, and informatization managementof hierarchical diagnosis and treatment. The new medical technologies conducted in these years, including interventional therapy for cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, mechanical thrombectomy for acute cerebral infarction, inspection on electrically stimulated olfactory evoked potential, diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis through determination of extracellular fragment of urinary neurotrophic factor receptor p75, diagnosis of alzheimer disease through 11C-PIB-PET/CT cerebrum Aβimaging, laparoscopic two-step resection assisted by preoperative planning with 3D printing, treatment of liver tumor with two-step hepatectomy in combination with hepatic dissection and portal vein ligation, diagnosis and treatment for primary aldosteronism, comprehensive management of elderly patients with chronic diseases, have filled in the gap in Shaanxi Province or Northwest China, and reached the domestic leading oradvanced level.
In recent years,the department has promoted several specific diagnosis and treatment programs, including comprehensive health assessment and chronic disease management of the elderly patients, and the perioperative risk assessment, rational medication evaluation and high quality nursing of the elderly patients, all of which have obtained remarkable achievements. Over the past three years, the department has set up 31 projects of various scientific research funds, including 5 national projects, 12 provincial and ministerial projects, and 14 municipal and college level projects. Eighty-four papers have been published, including 60 SCI ones. Three patents and 5 scientific achievements have been obtained, including the second prize of Ministry of Education Scientific and Technological Progress Award and the second prize of National Scientific and Technological Progress Award. The department has participated in the preparation of 8 guidelines and consensus on diseases of elderly patients, and has also become adiagnosis and treatment center and training center for stubborn and severe geriatric disease.
