The Clinical Laboratory of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University was established in 1956. Sixty years of development has made her one of the largest modern medical laboratories in the Northwest China possessing advanced equipmentsand the strongest comprehensive strength of teaching, scientific research and medical work. Now she is the National Key Discipline construction of clinical specialty and the high-throughput sequencing Pilot Laboratory (non-invasive prenatal screening, tumor diagnosis, genetic disease diagnosis) of National Health and Family Planning Commission and got ISO15189 medical laboratory accreditation certificate in 2015.

Eighty-four employees are working in the department, including 6 chief technicians, 7 associate chief technicians, 9 with doctor’s degree and 13 with master’s. Some of them serve as members of the Laboratory Science branch and the Medical Genetics branch of the Chinese Medical Association, and vice chairman of those of Shaanxi Medical Association. In terms of scientific research, the department has presided 8 National Natural Science Funds, 11 provincial projects, 3 municipal projects and 8 hospital project within 5 years containing funds of over 3 million yuan. Furthermore, the second and third prize of Science and Technology Progresses of Shaanxi Province had been obtained, 1 monographs was published, two patents of both invention and utility model was gained. More than 200 research papers were published as the first and primary author containing 40 included by SCI. As to teaching, 1 doctoral supervisor and 7 master supervisors in the department has supervised 1 postdoctoral student, over 20 doctoral students and 100 postgraduate students.

There are 7 professional groups in the laboratory: specimen treatment group, body fluidsgroup, hematologygroup, biochemical group, immunological group, molecular microbial ecology, emergency group. The department possesses automatic hematology analysis lines, automatic biochemical analysis lines, automatic immune analysis line, automatic immunoenzymatic analytic system, pharmacogenomic testing system, particular globin analyzer, glycosylated hemoglobin analyzer, automatic blood culture instrument, automated microbial identified and susceptibility system, automatic rapid microbial mass spectrometric detection system, microbial fingerprint identification system, pyrosequencing instrument, fluorescence quantitative analyzer and flow cytometry instrument and other international advanced equipments. The standard quality management system was established according to the requirements of CNAS-CL02 (ISO15189:2012, IDT). Besides introducing the hardware facilities of advanced equipments, the staff members of the Clinical Laboratory shall improve the quality of inspection work continuously and follow the code of "quality manual" to provide satisfactory services to patients and clinical staff of the whole hospital.
