Narcotic drugs are very scarce at Omdurman Friendship Hospital in Sudan, even the most basic opioid analgesics are unavailable, and no postoperative analgesia has been carried out. The choice of peripheral nerve block as an intraoperative anesthesia is an economical and effective method, and long-acting local anesthetic drugs can be injected in the operative region for long-term postoperative analgesia and relieving postoperative wound pain of patients. However, accurate localization of peripheral nerves is a very important prerequisite for successful peripheral nerve block. Currently, the peripheral nerve block under ultrasound guidance has become an international mainstream, which can accurately locate peripheral nerves to avoid nerve injury, reduce the amount of local anesthetic drugs, and decrease the incidence of local anesthetic poisoning. The Anesthesiology Department of our hospital has routinely applied the technology and achieved good results.

However, this technique has not been implemented at Omdurman Friendship Hospital in Sudan and the Anesthesiology Department in the hospital has not been equipped with ultrasound machines. Associate Chief Physician Wen Jian and Attending Physician Li Shang’an of Ultrasonic Department of our hospital, based on the actual situation of Omdurman Friendship Hospital in Sudan, applied this technique through close cooperation. Attending Physician Li Shang’an selected the appropriate case, borrowed the ultrasonic instrument from the Ultrasonic Department and brought to the operating room during rest period, and Associate Chief Physician Wen Jian personally conducted many operations of brachial and cervical plexus block, transverses abdominis plane block, femoral nerve block and central vein puncture, which achieved good results and won acclaim of Sudan surgeons and anesthesiologists. Sudan doctors had great interest in this technology and Attending Physician Li Shang’an used his rest time to offer training on basic principles and operation of ultrasound for them.
